What is Beam?
Beam is the horizontal Member which transfer loads from
slabs to column, beam is part of RCC frame structure or
Structural steel structure
Types of Beams
1. Simply Supported
2. Cantilever
3. Fixed
4. Overhanging
5. Continuous

In 2D plane:
∑𝐹𝑥 = 0 −𝐴𝑥 = 0 𝐴𝑥 = 0
! ∑𝐹𝑦 = 0 ⟹ ! 𝐴𝑦 − 1200 − 981 = 0 ⟹ ! 𝐴𝑦 = 2181 N
∑𝑀𝐴 = 0 𝑀𝐴 − 1200 ⋅ 2 − 981 ⋅ 3 = 0 𝑀𝐴 = 5343 Nm
(Recall: 𝑀 = 𝐹 ⋅ 𝑑%)
Problem: Determine the support reactions for the beam AB loaded
as shown. (Neglect the weight of beam)
Solution
Problem : A smooth pulley supporting a load of 3000 N is mounted
at B on a horizontal beam AC as shown in Figure. If the beam
weighs 1000 N, find the support reactions at A and C. (Neglect the
weight and size of pulley)

and the normal reaction at the roller B
Equivalent force couple system
Equivalent force couple system
A 4.8 m long beam is subjected to the forces shown. Reduce the
given system of forces to (a) an equivalent force couple system at
A, (b) an equivalent force couple system at B, (c) a single force or
resultant.
