Machine Design 1 Assignment No. 1 PROBLEMS:
1. Compute the safe wall thickness of a 90 cm diameter steel tank.
The tank is subjected to 8.5 MPa pressure and the steel material has yield stress of 230 MPa. The factor of safety to use is 3.5 2. A cylinder having an internal diameter of 24 in and an external diameter of 38 in is subjected to an internal pressure of 14,000 psi and an external pressure of 2,500 psi. Determine the hoop stress at the inner of the cylinder. 3. A cylindrical tank with 12 inches inside diameter contains oxygen gas at 2,200 psi. Calculate the required wall thickness in (mm) under stress of 27,000 psi. 4. Compute for the diameter (in inches) of a SAE 1030 steel shaft to transmit 24 hp at 125 rpm with torsional deflection below 0.08 degree/foot length as required. Use G = 12,000,000 psi for steel. 5. A 3.8 inches diameter short shaft carrying 2 pulleys close to the bearings transmits how much horsepower if the shaft makes 360 rpm. 6. Compute the speed of the gear mounted on 65.5 mm diameter shaft receiving power from a driving motor with 300 hp. 7. A solid cylindrical shaft 48.4 cm long is used for a transmission of mechanical power at a rate of 44 kw running at 1780 rpm. The shearing stress is 8.23Mpa. Calculate the diameter. 8. Find the torsional moment (in Newton-mm) developed when the shaft delivers 25 kw at 245 rpm.
