QUARTER 4

ENGLISH 10
LESSON 3

Expanded Definition or Extended Definition

An expanded definition:

 defines and explains a single term, concept, or object;

 pins down the meaning of a specific word, or defines an abstract concept; and
 goes deeper than a simple dictionary meaning.

There are two ways of expanding the definition of words.

1. Expanding the definition of words into a sentence

In expanding the definition of a word into a sentence, one must follow the pattern below.

2. Expanding the definition of words into a paragraph

There are three ways in expanding a definition into a paragraph, to wit:

a. Expanding by giving examples

In this way, the definition is expanded by enumerating or citing examples of how the word is used. In the sample
paragraph below, note how each example is added in the paragraph to expand the definition of the word speed.

Sample Definition:
Speed is a concept that marks our time. (EXAMPLE 1) Everybody is in a hurry to go somewhere. (EXAMPLE
2) Industry is constantly demanding new inventions that will speed up production so that the constant cry of the
bosses to the workmen is to speed it up! (EXAMPLE 3) The maker of automobiles boasts the newest type of car
which is faster than the old model. (EXAMPLE 4) Shoppers push and shove each other all about the counters.
(EXAMPLE 5) All are in a hurry to get something. (EXAMPLE 6) People who are going to school, shop, or office rush
breathlessly to do important tasks. (EXAMPLE 7) They gulp their food and swallow it in haste. (EXAMPLE 8) Restless
“hunters of fun” crowd into places of entertainment. (EXAMPLE 9) Most of these people cannot sit still. (EXAMPLE
10) At a movie, they tap their feet or fingers in impatience. Yes, speed is the word of the day.

b. Expanding by comparing and contrasting

In this way, the definition is expanded by citing how a word is similar to (comparing) and is different from
(contrasting) other concepts or ideas. In the sample paragraph below, take note of how comparisons and contrasts
are added in the paragraph to expand the definition of the word speed.
Sample Paragraph:
Speed is a concept that marks our day. (CONTRAST 1) Sluggishness is out. (COMPARISON 1) Speed is
demanded by industry which is constantly on the lookout for new inventions. (CONTRAST 2) Sluggishness is
penalized, especially in industries where compensation depends upon output. (COMPARISON 2) Speed is the
attractive come-on for short-term courses in cooking, computerizing, sewing, diving, learning, learning a new
language, and others. (CONTRAST 3) The slower long-term courses are not so appealing. (COMPARISON 3) Instant
coffee is usually preferred to coffee that must be boiled yet. Yes, speed is the word of the day.

c. Expanding by describing a process

In this way, the definition is expanded by describing a process, listing its steps in the correct order. In the
sample paragraph below, take note of how each step in a process is added in the paragraph to expand the definition
of the word speed.
Sample Paragraph:
The process of speeding up a vehicle (STEP 1) begins with the setting of the gear level to the first
gear. This moves the vehicle from a stationary to a slow speed of about less than ten kilometers per hour
(kph). (STEP 2) Gradually, you shift the gear to the next, pressing the accelerator pedal at the same time
to attain a speed between 10-30 kph. (STEP 3) You pick up more speed by shifting gears to the next
higher levels at speed beyond 30 kph. To do this, along with the shift to third or fourth gear, ever-
increasing pressure must be exerted on the accelerator. The only time you lift your foot from the
accelerator is when you shift gears so that you can step on the clutch pedal simultaneously with the
shifting. After releasing the clutch pedal, you immediately step on the accelerator pedal while picking up
speed. (STEP 4) Maximum speed is attained once you shift to the fourth, or in the case of some vehicles,
(STEP 5) the fifth gear, at which you travel at speed of 80 kph or above.
