INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES

Attempt all questions in both section A and B

SECTION A

1. Numbers 1, 2, 4, 3, 9, 5, m and n have a mean of 5 and a standard deviation of√7, find

the median of the numbers.
2. The weights of 40students were as follows
Weight(kg) 40 − 50 − 60 − 80 − -90 − 100 −
Number of students 8 10 12 𝑋 3 0
Using a known value of x, determine the modal weight of the students.
3. What should be the least mark Mr.Mutumba Joshua should get in his seventh exam to
attain a first class if he has an average of 78% in six papers and that a first class can be
obtained with an average of at least 80%?
4. The table below shows marks of some students in a promotional exam.
Marks 1 − 9 10 − 18 19 − 27 28 − 36 37 − 45 46 − 54
Cumulative frequency 5 13 23 38 60 84
Draw a histogram and use it to estimate the modal mark.
5. A) The sum of 20 numbers is 997 and the sum of their squares is 49711. Determine the
standard deviation of the numbers
6. The table below shows marks of some students in a Maths test.
Marks 10 20 35 30 40 50
Number of students 4 9 12 7 5 3
Use the table to find; i) median mark
ii) mean mark
7. Six numbers have a median of 7. The biggest and second biggest numbers are twice the
second smallest and smallest numbers respectively. Determine the numbers if their sum is
less than half the square of the biggest number by the sum of the middle 4 numbers and
that the range of the numbers is equal to the second biggest number.
8. Find the Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient for the following data and interpret your
value.
𝑋 44 38 53 80 44 30 93 72 73
𝑌 72 88 76 30 76 91 30 48 30

SECTION B
9. The table below shows the weights of maize in tones carried by different cars to a certain
market
0.5 2.3 0.8 1.1 2.6 1.9 1.4 1.7
1.3 2.7 0.7 0.8 3.3 0.5 1.9 2.9

i) Construct a frequency distribution table with classes of equal intervals of 500kg

starting with a class whose lower limit is 0.5tonnes.
ii) Using an assumed mean of 2.8tonnes, determine the variance of the weights
iii) Draw an ogive and use it to determine the limits of the middle 4th decile of the
weights.
10. Below is a summary of heights of 40students in a certain school.
Height < 20 < 40 < 50 < 55 < 65 < 80 < 100
0 8 25 30 32 38 40
Number of students

Calculate the;

i) Standard deviation
ii) Semi inter quartile range
iii) Required height for one to be included on the basketball team if 70% of the students
were included on the team basing on their height from the tallest one.
