II. 2nd year (2018-2019)

Standing Counsel, Adv. Meera Bhatia Chamber 402, B wing High Court Complex – SUMMER
INTERNSHIP (3rd June till 28th July, 2019)

OVERVIEW AND DURATION OF INTERNSHIP

With the initiation of Second Year and III semester, I applied for internship in Delhi High Court
under Sr. Counsel of Union of India and Ex-Standing Council for state of Haryana, Adv. Meera
Bhatia. The term of my internship was initially for 4 weeks but eventually ma’am and I decided
to extend it for 3 weeks more which lead to the stretch in period of Internship upto 7 weeks in
total.

Since, this was my first internship in a Court setting under a lawyer, was really curious to know
about the work which one goes through before appearing before the bench, and Mrs. Bhatia
helped in providing such experiences first handedly. She has a strict demeanor, thus, one needs
to follow time and rules while working with her.

My reporting time in the chamber was sharp 9.00 am and we used to work generally till 5.30 pm
however, in exceptional circumstances it would extend till 6 pm, although this was the schedule
for Week days, for weekends we used to carry forward our work in IIC (Indian International
Centre), Delhi where the reporting time was 10 am and work till 3 Pm.

WORK EXPERIENCE AND DAILY ROUTINE

⇒ Daily Routine

My first job after reaching the chamber was to check the case dairy where we have mentioned
about the listed case of particular day and then message ma’am regarding the listed hearings.
Soon after that I have to check the Court Room numbers and jot down the Supplementary cases
from the list hanged outside Court Room.

Further, once the rush hour is over that is around 12 noon, we need to keep a track on Mediation
and Arbitration cases in which ma’am has been allotted as Adjudicator. During the Afternoon
time we used to maintain case files and prepare summary of case orders of cases which are being
listed later in the month and then discuss such case an d their last order pronounced by the bench.

Although, the work in afternoon were dependent on the work load and listed cases in the court
but each day towards the end we used to prepare a case dairy for next day where we used to
update about next date of case hearing and used to check the Court Room number of next day
listed case through Delhi High Court’s Website.
⇒ Work Experience

Observed and worked upon the following – Arbitration Proceeding, High Court Hearings, PIL
Filling

I had an opportunity to work with ma’am in one of the Arbitration cases, where ma’am was
appointed as Arbitrator. The party to the case was IITD and private construction contractor; due
to the privacy privilege I will not be disclosing the proceedings of the case, however the parties
came to conclusion and settled their dispute, where IIT,D had to provide monitory compensation
to the opposite party.

⇒ ALLOTED WORK IN ARBITRATION PROCEEDING:

I was allotted with the work of making summary of the each proceeding and further assisting
ma’am with arranging the file of such proceeding by paginating them, working on the annexure
and Content of the Judgment file.

⇒ FILING OF PUBLIC INTEREST LITIGATION

Apart from Arbitration, I closely worked with ma’am in the drafting of Public Interest
Litigation in the matter pertaining to “Release of Fumes from Crematory near Hotel Lalit,
Delhi”, in the following PIL we contended for the installation of Electric Crematory Beds in
Crematory situated near hotel Lalit.

Further, in April 2020 during Covid lockdown, ma’am and I again work together and drafted a
Complaint against Delhi JAL BOARD “Sewage water administration” regarding supply of
sewage water as drinking in Delhi Region.

⇒ OBSERVING COURT HEARINGS

Adding Further, I was associated with ma’am in the Nirbhaya Appeal Hearing which was
regarding the installation of Street lights in Delhi and further she gave me leverage to attend any
court proceeding in High Court after completing the work so, I did observer other eminent
advocates argue in the court.

Currently, I’m in touch with ma’am and we are working over another PIL, she offered me to
work with her, although due to Pandemic hit and online courts, we are still figuring things out.

interactive and engaged with them in their proceedings and cases they were working upon or had
hearing.

⇒ DISTRICT LEGAL SERVICE AUTHORITY

Mukesh Chaudhary Sir and Vidhya Ma’am also work with DISTRICT LEGAL SERVICE

and order pronounced by the Court. Further, because ma’am under whose supervision I was
working as intern was Pregnant in few occasions she allotted me the task of appearing before the
court in her absence and collect written statements from the respondent party of such family
dispute.

MAJOR TAKE-AWAYS FROM INTERNSHIP IN DISTRICT COURT

My prior experience with High Court Lawyer helped me a bit in co-coordination and
understanding of listed case and pointing out supplementary cases. Further, this internship helped
me in analyzing and observing police report, charge sheets and Medical report of rape victim.

This internship proved to be a very fruitful one as, before and during this internship I was
reading subjects like: Medical Jurisprudence, Crpc, IPC; which really helped me in relating the
practical aspect with the theoretical aspects.
