CATEGORIZATION OF RESOURCES :The coal resources of India are available in older Gondwana Formations of peninsular India and younger Tertiary formations of north-eastern region. Based on the results of Regional/ Promotional Exploration, where the boreholes are normally placed 1-2 Km apart, the resources are classified into Indicated or Inferred category. Subsequent Detailed Exploration in selected blocks, where boreholes are less than 400 meter apart, upgrades the resources into more reliable Proved category. The Formation-wise and Category-wise coal resources of India as on 1.4.2010 are given in table below:
(in Million Tonnes)
* Includes 749.92 M.T. of Inferred resources established through mapping in NorthEastern region.

COAL WASHERIES :Coal India Ltd. (CIL) is heading in a big way for Coal Beneficiation of all types of coals. The present installed capacity of washery for thermal coal of about 110 Mt per annum is envisaged to reach about 250 Mt per annum in the next five years time. To meet the demand supply gap of washed coal, guidelines for setting up of coal washeries on Public Sector Coal Companys land have been issued by Ministry of Coal in September05. Accordingly, subsidiary coal companies of CIL are extending necessary assistance to facilitate setting up coal washeries by the linked consumers or by the prospective private washery operators/ investors on behalf of the linked consumers. At present the total capacity of non-coking coal washeries in operation in the country is about 109.67 Mt/annum, out of which about 90.95 Mt/annum is in private sector and 18.72 Mt/annum is with CIL. Some more non-coking coal washeries in the private sector are under construction. A location-wise list of existing washeries of CIL is given below :Name of Washery/Location Dudga-ii Bhojudih Patherdih Sudamdih Moonidih Mahuda BCCL Kathara Swang Rajrappa Kedla CCL Nandan WCL CIL NON-COKING COAL WASHERIES : Dugda-i Madhuban BCCL Gidi Piparwar Kargali CCL Bina NCL CIL Year of comm. 1969 1962 1964 1980 1983 1989 1970 1970 1986 1997 1984 Capacity ( MTY) 2.00 1.70 1.60 1.60 1.60 0.63 9.13 3.00 0.75 3.00 2.60 9.35 1.20 1.20 19.68

PROPOSED WASHERIES OF CIL :Coal India Limited has planned to set up 20 nos. of coal washeries (Coking and Non-Coking) having total capacity of 111.1 Mt of raw coal throughput in the first phase by 2011-12. Out of the total capacity mentioned above, 105.1 Mt capacity of washery will come up under "Build, Operate & Maintain (BOM)" concept whereas 6.0 Mt capacity of washery will come up on turnkey basis with a view to supply washed metallurgical and washed thermal coal to steel sector and power stations other than those located at pit head. CIL would provide capital for construction of these washeries. Global tenders for construction of seven washeries have been floated and tenders of all seven washeries have been opened. Evaluation of offers of four washeries has been completed. LOA for Madhuband washery has been issued to HEC by BCCL on 23.06.2010. Proposal of Patherdih washery has been approved by both BCCL and CIL Board and the Lowest Bidder (L1) has been informed accordingly. Proposal of Ashoka washery has been approved by CCL Board on 03.04.2011 and the Lowest Bidder (L1) has been informed accordingly. MCL has decided to re-tender Basundhara whereas evaluation of RFP (Request for Proposal) is in progress for Jagannath washery. Short listing for Common Centralized RFQ (Request for Qualification) document for (11 nos.) washeries has been completed and communicated to the respective bidders by CIL. Revised RFP (Request for Proposal) document has been approved by CIL on 02.04.2011 and circulated amongst subsidiary companies.
Tender documents for Basundhara washery, MCL (10.0 Mty) and Kusmunda washery, SECL (10.0 Mty) have been submitted to the respective subsidiary companies for tendering of the same. Further, it has been decided that all new opencast projects of 2.5 Mt and above capacity, which are not linked to pithead power stations should be designed with integrated washery. Two dry deshaling plants based on Radiometric dry deshaling and All-mineral All-air Jig technology are also under implementation by CMPDI under CIL R&D grant.
