Types of Files
1. Generic file type
a. Can be opened in any OS
b. Can be opened in any Device platform
c. Can be opened in any Software
2. Package/Application specific file type
a. MS office
i. Word processing → MS Word → *.docx
ii. Presentation → MS PowerPoint → *.pptx
iii. Spreadsheet → MS Excel → *.xlsx
iv. Database → MS Access → *.accdb
v. Image Editing → Abode Photoshop → *.psd

Generic file types


1. Text file
• .csv → generic text file format. Texts are separated with comma.
i. Use as table (spreadsheet, database)
• .txt → generic text file format.
i. Can be opened and saved with text editor.
ii. Can be only opened with word processing software
• .rtf → generic text file format.
i. Texts can be formatted. (font colour, underline, bulleted, table)
ii. Can be opened and saved with any word processing software.
iii. More file size than .txt
2. Image file
• .gif
• .jpg/.jpeg
i. bitmap image,
ii. lossy compression,
iii. no background transparency,
iv. less file size
• .png
i. bitmap image,
ii. lossless compression,
iii. background transparency,
iv. more file size
• .pdf
i. document that has been converted into an image format
ii. can be read on most computers
iii. can contain clickable links and buttons, form fields, video and audio
iv. can protect a document in pdf format to stop others from editing

• Reducing any types of file or folder → by compressing the file (.zip/.rar)
• Image file size
o File compression
o Graphic editing software → Adobe photoshop
▪ Adjust dimension (width / height) → ch11
• Aspect ratio → 400 x 200 (2:1) → 200 x 200 (1:1)
• Change aspect ratio → image distortion
▪ Adjust resolution → ch11
▪ Adjust color depth → ch12
• Number of colours in each channel/pixel
o 8 bits/channel = 24 bits
