Design 2 Portfolio

This document outlines 7 assignments for a design portfolio. Each assignment provides instructions for creating color studies, compositions, and illusions using principles of color theory. The assignments involve proportional palettes, complementary colors, color interaction, and developing motifs across a triptych based on different environments.

Gather found materials
(packaging/trash) with ink dots on
them and create proportional color
palettes using these ink colors.

ASSIGNMENT 1
Add a color of your choice to these
palettes and develop many different
proportional palettes. Then, choose

ASSIGNMENT 1
FINAL

I was inspired by rolls and strips of film, but didn’t

want the final design to be too representational. I
employed scale and wanted to emphasize some
interactions between the shapes. Some of these
interactions resemble illusions of transparency
(before we had learned how to do them correctly.)
Create a 12 scale color wheel with two
steps of tints and three steps of
shades.

ASSIGNMENT 2
FINAL

I had to give a couple of the colors a few tries to get

them right. This assignment was crucial to building
the foundation of color mixing, tinting, and shading I
needed for the rest of the course. After critiques, I
mainly focused on fixing my blue and then
resubmitted.
Build an extended complementary
color palette. Explore as many
combinations as you can. Arrange
your colors in 1" by 1" squares.

ASSIGNMENT 3 Create motifs and patterns using an

isometric grid.

your isometric motifs and
complementary palette.

ASSIGNMENT 3
FINAL

I wanted the colors on the cubes to get darker going

up and the background to get darker as it went
down. I had to consider consistent light and shadow
on the sides of the cubes. The colors in the diamond
shapes also transition from light to dark and were
neutral mixes of the red and blue green.
Using the Color Aid, find 2 separate
colors for fields and 1 strip color to
simulate 4 total colors.

ASSIGNMENT 4
Use the same fields and colors, but
find another color in order to simulate
3 total colors when really using 4.
Color and Color Interaction:
Simultaneous Contrast

Find items in life that match your

fields and take photos. Arrange the
strips and photo fields in order to
create the illusions.

ASSIGNMENT 4
Simultaneous Contrast
FINAL

I made a couple edits to the photos in order to

increase their saturation and vibrancy. Once I printed
everything, I made sure I was in a well lit area to test
that the colors were operating successfully.

Expanded Simultaneous Contrast

Use the Color Aid to create an illusion
of transparency study and then build
a proportional color palette and color
world balanced with this illusion of
transparency.

ASSIGNMENT 5 Create an asymmetrical nonobjective

design.
Color and Color Interaction:
Transparency

Within this design, create many

illusions of transparency, as well as
utilizing actual transparency.

ASSIGNMENT 5
FINAL

I wanted to create movement in my design, so I used the orange

simple shapes and scattered them to determine how my motifs
would be arranged. I like the use of the crescent motif because I
think it creates interesting interactions. My favorite part of this piece
is this crescent/circle interaction near the bottom. The most
challenging part of this assignment was using the paint for the actual
transparencies, but practice with this was useful because I used a bit
of it for my final project.
Choose a triadic color scheme and
pick a light source color, shadow
color, and atmospheric color.

ASSIGNMENT 6
FINAL
Since I chose a night scene for this assignment, I had to be really
aware of the light sources in the image. I established a system (that I
mostly stuck to) where the objects facing the viewer would be in my
red orange color, the objects facing away from the viewer would be
in blue violet, and the ground and foreground would be yellow green,
I think this assisted in the illusion. I’m happy with how the shading
and tinting helped show the pools of light spilling onto the walls or
ground. This was one of my favorites I did.
Develop 3 separate proportional color
palettes based on the environment of a
childhood memory, a lived environment
(home), and a store or shop.

ASSIGNMENT 7
Brainstorm, sketch motif ideas, and
create a design across a 3 paneled
panoramic triptych.

ASSIGNMENT 7
FINAL
The childhood memory panel (left) includes a pattern inspired by my Grandma’s
wallpaper and collage materials that evoke childhood and sweets. The middle panel
represents my home and living space in Delaware, and the right panel was inspired by
Trader Joe’s (the collage material is a Trader Joe’s bag.) I wanted to be sure to create a
sense of movement throughout the entire composition, which I did using the large
circles and crescent shapes. I also utilized transformation between the leaf shapes to
the middle circles and from the circles to the wine glass shapes, as well as a
transformation in color from the light orange circle (top left) to the darker brown circle
(top right.) I used illusions of transparency for the colors within the larger middle
orange circles and actual transparencies on the collage materials.
