Lesson 1 Formative Quiz - Transformations of Data (NO GDC) [8 marks]

Using the give box plot, answer the following:

a) Find the 5 number summary and IQR for the data. [2]

b) Give a rationale for why there are no outliers. [2]

The data is known to have a mean of 𝑥 = 5. 5 and a standard deviation of σ = 1. 6. All of the data
points are halved and then 3 is added to each data point.

c) Find the new values for the 5 number summary, IQR, mean, and variance. [4]

Solutions
a) Min = 2 IQR = 8 - 3 = 5 M1A2
Q1 = 3
Med = 6
Q3 = 8
Max = 10

b) IQR x 1.5 = 7.5. R2

8 + 7.5 = 15.5, which is greater than max
3 - 7.5 = -4.5, which is less than min

c) Min = 4 MIA1 IQR = 7 - 4.5 = 2.5

Q1 = 4.5 Mean = 5.5/2 + 3 = 5.75 A1
Med = 6 Variance = (½ std dev)2 = 0.82 = 0.64 A1
Q3 = 7
Max = 8
Lesson 2 Formative Quiz - Function Fundamentals (NO GDC) [8 marks]

The graph of f(x) below has a y-intercept at 2.5. Use the graph of f(x) and the given
input-output table for g(x) to determine the following.

a) f(4) b) g(3) c) x, if f(x) = -4 d) x, if g(x) = 5

[4]
e) Determine, based on the given information, if f(x) and g(x) are both functions.
[4]

Solutions
a) f(4) = 1 A1
b) g(3) = 10 A1
c) if f(x) = -4, x = 6 A1
d) if g(x) = 5, x = -1 or 10 A1
e) f(x) is a function, it passes the vertical line test A1R1
g(x) is a function, for each input there is exactly one output A1R1
Lesson 3 Formative Quiz - Function Fundamentals (GDC) [8 marks]

Let the function h(x) represent the height in centimeters of a cylindrical tin can with
diameter x cm.
640
ℎ(𝑥) = 2 + 0. 5 , 4 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 14
𝑥
(a) Find the range of h.
[3]

The function h is the inverse function of h.
(b.i) Find h-1(10).
[2]
(b.ii) In the context of the question, interpret your answer to part (b)(i).

Lesson 4 Formative Quiz - Function Fundamentals (NO GDC) [10 marks]

Use the graph of f(x) and the given input-output table for g(x) to determine the following. If the
answer is not possible, state why not.

a) (f ○ g)(7) b) (g ○ g)(7) c) (f ○ g)(10) d) (g ○ f)(-1) e) x, if (f ○ g)(x) = 5

[10]

Solutions
a) f(g(7)) = f(-1) = 0 M1A1
b) g(g(7)) = g(-1) = 5 M1A1
c) f(g(10)) = f(5) = 2(5)3 - 3(5)2 + 5 = 180 M1A1
d) g(f(-1)) = g(0) = 3 M1A1
e) f(g(x)) = 5, g(x) = 0, x = unknown M1A1
Lesson 5 Formative Quiz - Function Transformations (NO GDC) [5 marks]
The graph of y = f(x) for -4 ≤ x ≤ 6 is shown in the diagram.

(a.i) Write down the value of f(2).
