Credit Hours 2+1

Course Description:
This is an introductory course on Information and Communication Technologies. Topics include ICT
terminologies, hardware and software components, the Internet and the World Wide Web, and ICT-based
applications.
The goal of Applications of ICT is to provide students undertaking a business degree with an understanding
of information and communication technologies (ICTs). This course will provide students with a firm
foundation in ICT, which they can then apply to their career, no matter what area of business they intend
to pursue.

ICTs are everywhere in business and they have changed business processes forever. ICTs are pervasive
because information is needed throughout all aspects of the business environment, and access to information
is one of the most powerful resources in every business function. Knowledge of ICT is an essential element
of success in virtually any position, and although not all people need to be an IS professional, everyone
needs a sound understanding of ICT use in his or her profession. This course will provide students with a
balance of technical and management issues needed to survive the current and future business environment.

After the course, students will have gained valuable insights on ICTs, enabling them to work productively
with ICT specialists. In addition, students will gain knowledge about business systems and applications to
ensure that ICTs support their work most constructively.

Course Outcomes:
After completing this course, a student will be able to:

 Understand different terms associated with ICT


 Identify various components of a computer system
 Identify the various categories of software and their usage
 Define the basic terms associated with communications and networking
 Understand different terms associated with the Internet and World Wide Web.
 Use various web tools including Web Browsers, E-mail clients and search utilities.
 Use text processing, spreadsheets and presentation tools
 Understand the enabling/pervasive features of ICT
Teaching Methodology:
The class will be conducted in a lecture and discussion environment. The students will be encouraged to
participate and ask questions during each class session. Students will also do practical work to understand
algorithm design and implementation.

Testing and Grading:


Students will be assessed through Assignments, Quizes, Lab-Work and Presentation.

 Assignments are compulsory. At least one assignment will be due fortnightly (15 days). These will
be due at the start of class on the indicated due dates. Late submissions are not allowed.
 There will be also 2 quizzes and one semester project carrying 20 marks. Students will also present
their semester project.

Marks Distribution:
Grading system for the subject is same as other subjects which is Midterm (30%) and Final Term exam
(50%). 20% marks are dedicated for semester Assignments, projects and presentations.
