Critical path method (CPM)
 How to find the critical path for
the project?
 How to find the critical activities and
non critical activities
 How to calculate the slack of
activities?
 how to find the total project
completion time?

• Estimate the project completion time by finding the
critical path.

• Identify the start and finish times for each activity for
a project schedule.

• Calculate the amount of slack time for each activity

Equations to be used in CPM

• Earliest start time (ES) - The earliest finish time of the

immediately preceding activity.
• Earliest finish time (EF) - An activity’s earliest start time plus its
estimated duration (t).
EF = ES + t
• Latest finish time (LF) - The latest start times of the activity that
immediately follows.
• Latest start time (LS) - The latest finish time minus its
estimated duration (t)
LS = LF − t
• Activity Slack - The maximum length of time that an activity
can be delayed without delaying the entire project
S = LS − ES or S = LF − EF

Application 7.2 (1 of 3)

the critical path and project duration for the diagram.
