CE331 – Highway and Railroad Engineering

Assignment #1

1.) Definition of Transportation

- When we hear the word "transportation," the first thing that comes to mind is
vehicles and vehicle systems. Indeed, these means of transport are
interconnected with transportation because they are utilized in the process.
Therefore, the movement of individuals, objects, or animals between locations
is referred to as transportation. The different primary modes of transportation
that are accessible include road, railway, maritime, and air transportation. An
efficient, effective, and sustainable transportation system is essential for
economic growth and development because it enables the movement of
resources, products, and people.

2.) Importance of Transportation

- The significance of transportation lies in its primary purpose: transporting
someone or something to another location. It plays a pivotal role in our society,
as it is one of the foundational elements of civilization. Transportation facilitates
trade, commerce, and communication, all of which are critical factors affecting
various aspects of our lives, the economy, and the functioning of society.
Without it, businesses would fail to thrive and expand, as the movement of
goods, raw materials, and products would grind to a halt. Furthermore, access
to essential resources and services like food, water, energy, and healthcare
would be compromised, as they rely on efficient distribution. Lastly, global trade
would cease to exist, as international trade heavily depends on maritime and
air transportation.

3.) What are the different modes of transportation?

- The primary modes of transportation that are accessible for transporting people
and resources from one place to another are: road transportation, railway
transportation, water transportation, and air transportation.
a. Road transportation - This covers automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, and
bicycles as well as other moving vehicles on roads and highways. For
short- to medium-distance travel, road transit is adaptable and often
employed.

b. Rail transportation - It is a mode of transportation involving trains or other

vehicles that travel along railroad tracks. Rail travel has proven to be
one of the safest and most dependable routes of transportation. In
comparison to other modes of transportation, trains are swift and least
impacted by typical weather turbulences like rain or fog.

c. Water transportation - This mode involves the transportation of people

and products over bodies of water, such as rivers, seas, oceans, and
canals. Various uses exist for ships, boats, ferries, and barges.
d. Air transportation - Airplanes are used for fast, long-distance travel, both
for passengers and cargo. Air travel connects cities and countries
around the world.

4.) Which is more efficient and advantageous? Bus Rapid Transits or Railway Transits
here in Cebu?
- Both proposed plans of action can assist in minimizing and resolving the traffic
congestion problems here in Cebu. However, I believe that Railway Transit is
more efficient and advantageous than Bus Rapid Transit for several reasons.

Firstly, according to a report from the Cebu City Transport Office, 80% of the
vehicles on the city streets are private automobiles, with only 10% dedicated to
public transport. Implementing Bus Rapid Transit may not alleviate congestion
since private vehicle owners may not choose to commute, as they are
accustomed to private travel, which offers more comfort than public
transportation.

Secondly, while the construction of railways is expensive and may cause

significant traffic disruptions in affected areas during the construction phase, it
offers substantial long-term benefits in terms of reliability, capacity, and speed.
By providing commuters with the option to use train rail transportation, we can
expect a reduction in the traffic problems experienced by the city. However, the
success of this solution still depends on the discipline of commuters, both public
and private drivers, in adhering to traffic rules and regulations. Introducing new
solutions will have limited impact if people do not comply with them properly.
5.) Difference between Highway and Traffic Engineering

- Although they are closely linked disciplines of civil engineering, highway

engineering and traffic engineering concentrate on various facets of
transportation infrastructure and administration. The design, planning,
construction, and maintenance of highways, roads, and other transportation
networks are the core topics covered by highway engineering. It includes the
physical infrastructure, such as the design and construction of highways,
bridges, tunnels, and associated buildings. Traffic engineering, on the other
hand, focuses on managing and controlling traffic flow and transportation
networks. Traffic management systems, signal timing, traffic behavior, and
congestion management are all covered.
