INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Research

Language is one of the important things for humans to communicate with

each other. Language itself makes human relations closer day by day 1. In a

society, humans may not be able to communicate without using language as a

means of communication. Language can be studied in Linguistics. Linguistics is

the study of human language2. One of the branches of linguistics is

sociolinguistics, which is a developmental study of linguistics that takes language

variation as its focus, and sees language variation itself in its social context.

Language used to express their information, ideas, thoughts, feeling mind, and to

develop science technology and culture. It is no matter communicating in a group

of people which use a writing or even they speak each other directly. Everybody

has their own language and accent in communicating with their environment.

Each of the community in the world tries to be able to use the language in their

daily communication, including Indonesian people.

Sociolinguistics concentrates on the correlation between social factors

and linguistic variations. Based on a statement from Fishman, sociolinguistics is

the study of the characteristics of language use functions with the characteristics

of language users themselves3. Sociolinguistics basically does not focus on the

structure of a language, but focuses on how the language is used in its social and

cultural context. One of the concentrations in sociolinguistics is code switching.

Code switching is an event of using two or more than one language by

the communicator in speaking4. Code switching usually occurs in a bilingual

social environment. Hamers and Blanc defines bilingualism as a linguistic

community in which two languages are in one contact with the result that both

languages can be used in one interaction, and some people are often bilingual.

Basically, Indonesian people can also speak two or more languages 5. They master

the local language, Indonesian as the national language, and even foreign

languages. Speakers often use two languages that are mastered directly,

spontaneously, and unintentionally.

A person sometimes mixes up or changes his language when

communicating with other people, both bilingual and multilingual. Bilingual is a

person who uses two languages, while multilingualism is a person who uses more

than one language. In other words, there are situations where speakers

intentionally change the code used, i.e. code switching from one language to

another, or situations where people mix two languages when they speak or

communicate with another.

When listen to a podcast, the people often hear language switching,

usually only 2 languages are used. In Indonesia, there are lots of podcasts that

invite an influencer who often switches Indonesian and English in their daily

conversations. In the present time, many media broadcasts conversations using

code switching, but few are aware of this. In this modern era, we can see on

YouTube videos showing podcasts, code switching can also be found in some

podcasts and this will be an interesting way of learning. Actually, podcasts by

inviting guest stars who often use code switching in daily conversations can be

used as a good place to learn. In addition to interesting learning, there is also

information that can be obtained when listening to the podcast.

Deddy Corbuzier is one of the YouTubers with a very large number of

subscribers and viewers, the contents of which are also podcasts. It is not

uncommon for Deddy Corbuzier to invite successful people to be a guest stars on

his podcast. For example, Deddy Corbuzier has invited an influencer named Cinta

Laura to his podcast, which is broadcast as a video on YouTube, Cinta Laura is

one of many person who has studied in Europe. So, she often switches the

language from Indonesian to English when speaking when she back to Indonesia.

In the podcast she also switch English to Indonesian and Indonesian to English,

that why this podcast is good to analysis the code-switching in it.

In teaching and learning program, this is one good opportunity to

improve the quality of learning English. In an effort to improve English skills,

learning through podcasts can be easy to understand, every sentence spoken by 2

people who speak on podcasts can add insight. Although learning through

podcasts is a great thing, many people don't realize it. Therefore, it is quite

unfortunate if things like this are not put to good use. Research on code switching

through podcasts is great for improving English communication skills.

From the problems above, the researcher is interested analisis the

research about the title "Code Switching Analysis In Deddy Corbuzier Podcast".

1.2 Identification of the Research

Base on the background above, the researcher has identified problem

related to the topic of the research, they are:

1. There is the difficult language in the video of podcast until the listeners find it

difficult to understand the meaning of the conversation that takes place

between two people and some others also use mixed language or slang

language.

2. In the podcast conversation there is a lot of code switching that is used even

they talk about many topics and also use mixed code switching and use the

language that is very difficult to understand.

3. It is quite unfortunate if things like this are not put to good use. Research on

code switching through podcasts is great for improving English

communication skills.

4. In teaching and learning program, this is one good opportunity to improve the

quality of learning English.

5. Often switches the language from Indonesian to English when speaking when

she back to Indonesia. In the podcast she also switch English to Indonesian

and Indonesian to English, that why this podcast is good to analysis the code-

switching in it.

1.3 Problem of the Research

Based on the above review, the researcher find out two problems of the

topic, they are:

1. What types of code switching are occurred in Deddy Corbuzier’s podcast?

2. What are functions of using code-switching in Deddy Corbuzier’s podcast?

1.4 Purpose of the problem

Based on the existing problems, this research has two purposes of

writing, they are:

1. To find and describe the type of code switching used in Deddy Corbuzier’s

podcast.

2. To analyze the function of using code-switching in Deddy Corbuzier’s

podcast.

1.5 Scope of the Research

The scope of this study focuses on analyzing code switching found on the

Deddy Corbuzier’s podcast: Cinta Laura which was published on March 11th

2020. The researcher analyzes the types of code switching which has three types;

those are extra-sentential code switching, inter-sentential code switching, and

inter-sentential code switching. In addition, the researcher analyzes the possible

reasons why Deddy Corbuzier and Cinta Laura used code switching in their

conversation.

1.6 Significance of the Research

The study hopes this research have some significances in the study of the

analyze code mixing and code switching that found on the Deddy Corbuzier’s

podcast. The results of this study can be useful in two are:

1. Theoretically Significances

The result of this research to increase readers knowledge about code

mixing and code switching. This research is also expected to be a

reference for who wants to do the same cases especially for students that

study about Linguistic

2. Practically Significances

The result of this research can be used a contribution about code mixing

and code switching used in Deddy’s podcast entitled “Cinta Laura” for the

people who watches it.

1.7 Operational Definition

To make this thesis title is clearer, the writer gives some definition of

term:

1. Code Switching

Code Switching is the transition of using one language code to another

language code. If someone first uses language code A, for example Indonesian,

then switches to language code B, for example English, then such a shift in usage

is called code-switching. Code switching also occurs when someone connects or

inserts a second language into the speech of his first language, but each clause of

the two languages still supports its own language function. In this era, a lot of

people use some language in their conversation with their community or even

with their environment. Especially in Indonesia itself, the people sometimes mix

or switches their language when they speak or when they type/write some text

with another people. This phenomenon is not weird anymore now. This happens

because the people in Indonesia are included into the category of society which

can be said to be bilingualism or multilingualism.

2. Podcast

Podcasts are audio recordings that can be listened to by the general

public. Unlike radio which is broadcast live from a certain frequency, you can

listen to podcasts anytime via the internet. The podcast is a digital audio or video

file or recording, usually part of themed downloaded from a website to a media

player or computer. This is actually different from radio, where most of the

content is live broadcast. Podcast has quickly become the most popular social

media that has a great impact to allow the audience to know the knowledge

broadly. Podcast is a series of spoken, audio episode, often focused on a particular

topic or theme. Most podcast today just only audio even though video podcast do

exist. Podcasting has really grown out of need for background content.
