Guidelines for formatting headings

Heading Formatting
Main heading  Place at the top of the first page of the
document, either aligned left or
centred.
 Type in the largest font in the
document in either bold closed
capitals with one or two spaces
between words or spaced (expanded)
capitals with three spaces between
words.
 May be underlined
Subheading  Placed immediately below the main
heading with a clear line spacing
between
 Typed in slightly smaller font than the
main heading
 Either aligned left or centred
 Typed in either bold closed capitals
with one or two spaces between words
or initial capitals (title case) with
underlining

Shoulder heading  Two clear line spaces between the


preceding paragraph and the shoulder
heading. Place above next paragraph
with a clear line space between
heading and paragraph, left aligned
 Either closed capitals with or without
underlining or initial capitals with
underlining or bold
 May enumerated using either letters or
numbers
Paragraph Heading  Placed in the first line of the paragraph
 Left aligned or indented according to
the style of paragraph
 Either closed capitals with or without
underlining or initial capitals with
underlining or bold
 Either followed by a colon or full stop
with three spaces after the punctuation
mark or with two spaces after the last
word of the heading or with one space
after it is part of the opening sentence
Marginal Heading  Placed in the left margin, left aligned
or indented
 Typed in closed capitals or initial
capitals in the same font and size as
the paragraph
 May or may not be underline or bold
