3. Answer ALL THREE questions.
4. Start EACH question at the top of a NEW page.
5. Number the answers correctly according to the numbering system used in
this question paper.
6. Do NOT write in the margins of the ANSWER BOOK.
7. Units of measurement MUST be indicated in your final answer, e.g. 1 020
hPa, 14 °C and 45 m.
8. You may use a non-programmable calculator.

SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION FOR SECTION B
10. 1 : 50 000 topographic map 3224BC GRAAFF REINET and a 1 : 10 000
orthophoto map 3224BC 01, are provided.
11. The area demarcated in RED/BLACK on the topographic map represents
the area covered by the orthophoto map.
12. Show ALL calculations. Marks will be allocated for this.
13. You must hand in the topographic and orthophoto map to the invigilator at
the end of the examination.

GENERAL INFORMATION OF GRAAFF - REINET

Coordinates:32°15’18’’ S; 24°32’26’’E

Graaff-Reinet lies 750 metres above sea level and is built on the banks of the
Sundays River, which rises a little further north on the southern slopes of the
Sneeuberge, and splits into several channels.

Graaff-Reinet has an average temperature of 18°C and is 3.8% lower than South
Africa’s averages. Graaff-Reinet typically receives about 87mm of rainfall and has
128 rainy days annually. The Fohn are occurring at Spandauville. Fohn winds are hot
- they can raise temperatures by as much as 34°C and quickly dries the vegetation.

The town is home to several tourist attractions. The town is also home to tourist sites
such as The Valley of Desolation, Camdeboo National Park and Reinet House
Museum, a Cape Dutch building, formerly the Dutch Reformed Church Parsonage.
