Tutorial Sheet 1
Course title: Control Engineering Instrumentation
Course Code: EEF 264
Course Instructor: Dr. Nouadjep Serge
Section A: Short answers questions
1. Define sensors and list the various specifications that need to be carefully studied before
using them.
2. Differentiate between span and range of a transducer system
3. What do you mean by nonlinearity error? How it is different than Hysteresis error?
4. State the applications of Wheatstone bridge in control engineering instrumentation.
5. With suitable example Explain, the importance of data conversion devices in control
engineering.
6. List the applications of potentiometer sensor in/around your home.
7. Explain the principle of working of LVDT
8. Explain the principle of working of Hall effect sensor.
9. A thermal sensor that produces a voltage in proportion to the temperature is called?
10. State the different types of transducers
Section B:
Question 1:
Electromagnetic Transduction is widely used in the design of sensors.
a) List the different types of sensors which are based on this transduction principle
b) By using clearly annotated diagrams, briefly describe how each of the sensors in (a)
functions.
c) One design of such sensors has 180 electromagnets imprinted at regular intervals on the
periphery of a disk. A coil is placed at a fixed position near the disk. The central spindle
of the disk is connected to an object which rotates for 0.6 second and generates 70 pulses
in the coil.
i) What is the angular position of the object in degrees?
ii) What is the angular speed in radians per second?

Question 2:
a) An inductive displacement sensor consists of a ferromagnetic core which moves freely
inside a solenoid. The solenoid carries a constant current of 5A and the inductance of the sensor
increases by 0.1H per cm of displacement of the ferromagnetic core into the solenoid. When
the sensor is used to measure the linear displacement of an object which moves for two
seconds, an output voltage of 2Volts is obtained. What is the linear displacement?

b) A linear encoder has 400 ferromagnets encoded on a strip of metal which is 200mm
long. If the metallic strip is displaced through a distance of 0.8cm, how many pulses are
generated by the coil?
Question 3:

Question 5:
A strain gauge has a resistance of 250 Ω and a gauge factor G of 2.2. It is bonded to an object
to detect movement. Determine the change in resistance of the strain gauge if it experiences a
tensile strain of 450µε due to the change in size of the object. Also, if the relationship between
change in resistance and displacement is 0.05 Ω.mm-1, determine the change in size of the
object.

Question 6:
A strain gauge bridge has a strain gauge of resistance R = 200 Ω and a gauge factor G of 1.9.
R2, R3 and R4 are fixed resistors also rated at 200 Ω.
The strain gauge is bonded to an object to detect
movement. It experiences a tensile strain of
400microstrain due to the displacement of the object.
Determine the change in resistance ∆R of the strain gauge.
Also, if the input voltage Vi is 4 volts then determine the
change in output voltage ∆V0.

Question 7:
Consider a capacitor consisting of two parallel conductive plates in parallel. Each conductive
plate has a width w of 0.1 m and length of 0.5 m. The distance d between the two plates is 0.1
m. The relative permeability of the dielectric εr is 1. Given that the permittivity of free space
ε0 is 8.854 x 10-12 F.m-1 determine the capacitance of this device. If the overlap of the plates is
reduced by moving one plate horizontally a distance x of 50 mm, determine the new value of
capacitance.

Question 8:
An accelerometer shown in figure consists of mass weight 0.5N attached to
a spring cantilever. The spring is made up of a material modulus of elasticity
200GN/m2 and is of uniform rectangular cross section. The output is
obtained from a strain gauge bridge of four active strain gauges of gauge
factor 2. Two strain gauges are mounted on each side of the cantilever. The
gauges are connected in a bridge circuit with input voltage of 3V d.c. Find
the bridge output voltage at open circuit for horizontal acceleration of 4g
