CHAPTER 1

Background of the Study

According to Liu Hwang and Lin (2019) in their article, which focusedin the relationship

between English fluency focused in the relationship between English fluency in oral

communication, they stated that English proficiency was positively correlated to the English

fluency plays a significant role for students to complete their studies in English medium

institution particularly students whose first language is not English (Wanjohi 2015).

Yang and Saumure (2006) highlighted the importance of English fluency in the socio-cultural

adaption to an English medium academic environment. Many previous studies have examined

the relationship between English fluency and students overall academic performance by using

standardized test such as IELTS (International English Language Testing System). One of the

study was conducted at a university in Louisiana, USA (Mantirosyan, Huang and Wanjohi 2015)

showed statistically positive correlation between self-perceived English Language fluency and

grade point averages (GPAs) among 59 out of 300 students.

Taguchi (2014) examined how English fluency level affects students academic achievement by

utilizing both self reported questionnaire and standardized test. His study have also shown the

need for students to have sufficient English fluency in order to be able to understand the

feedback given by the instructor. Lheng, Yu and Lin (2020) also investigated the individual

differences among lower proficiency tools affected poor interaction.

English is the "operating systems" of the global conversation spoken by a quarter of the world

population British Council (2014). Here in the Philippines, a study conducted by (Odocado, 2020) have

shown that various factors influence students to become proficient in their communication skills. He
also stated that problem with proficiency in the English language affects the success of nursing students

and even in thier Nurse Licensure Examination, as English language is use by the instructor to teach

curriculum courses it may be considered a barrier to effectively learning and academic success.

Linking the English language proficiency and students achievement Raca and Laster (2016) concurred

that language proficiency is a big factor for a student to be active their academic. He also stated that a

person who have poor language and communication skills, poor techniques of answering questions and

the lack of depth treatment of topics will affect the students general academic performance.

According to Matiki and Zagani (2007), students who have difficult comprehending the lesson and

concept of the subject presented in the English Language may negatively affect their academic

performance.

The importance of English language proficiency for students is much needed in today's world because it

will be an asset of one student and soon to be a graduates to earn decent employment. In that case, the

researcher will examined it English Language fluency is indeed here a positive impact to students

academic performance.

The ability to communicate effectively in English is essential for ademic success. However, many Filipino

students struggle with English fluency particularly in terms of oral communication. In this regard, this
