Airport Definitions

2. Terminal: A building at the airport where passengers check in, go through
security, and board their flights. Terminals usually include waiting areas, shops,
restaurants, and other amenities.
3. Departure: The act of leaving from the airport to fly to another destination. The
area where passengers wait to board their flights is called the departure lounge.
4. Arrival: The act of arriving at the airport from another destination. The area
where passengers retrieve their luggage and exit the airport is called the arrival
area.
5. Check-in: The process of registering for a flight at the airline's counter,
confirming your presence, and obtaining a boarding pass.
6. Boarding Pass: A document that allows a passenger to enter the aircraft and
take their assigned seat. It includes flight details and seat information.
7. Security Check: The procedure where passengers and their belongings are
screened to ensure that no prohibited items or threats are taken onto the aircraft.
This is done by passing through a metal detector and having carry-on items
scanned.
8. Customs: The government agency responsible for inspecting passengers and
goods coming into a country. Customs officers may check for items that need to
be declared or taxed.
9. Immigration: The process of verifying a traveler's passport, visa, and other
necessary documentation to enter a country. Immigration officers control the
entry and exit of passengers.
10. Baggage Claim: The area at the airport where passengers collect their checked
luggage after arriving at their destination.
11. Gate: The designated area where passengers board their flights. It's usually
indicated by a gate number, and announcements are made for boarding at the
appropriate gate.
12. Runway: A long paved strip on which airplanes take off and land. It's typically
made of concrete or asphalt and is equipped with lighting for safe operation
during the day and night.
13. Taxiway: A pathway for aircraft to move between runways and terminals. It
allows planes to move to and from the runway without interfering with other
aircraft.
14. Air Traffic Control (ATC): The service responsible for coordinating and
monitoring the movement of aircraft in and around an airport and throughout
airspace.
15. Baggage Cart/Trolley: A wheeled device used to transport luggage around the
airport. Passengers can load their luggage onto the cart to make it easier to move
through the terminal.
16. Lounge: A comfortable area within the airport, often for premium or frequent
fliers, where passengers can relax, work, or enjoy refreshments before their flight.
17. Flight Attendant: A member of the cabin crew on an airplane who assists
passengers during the flight with safety instructions, service, and other needs.
18. Cabin: The interior of the airplane where passengers sit during the flight.
19. Aisle: The narrow walkway between rows of seats in an airplane or other
transport vehicle.
20. Window Seat: A seat located next to the airplane's window, allowing passengers
to look outside during the flight.
