MEDIA AND INFORMATION LITERACY

Grade 12 – HUMSS
Time Allotted: 60 minutes

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to:


1. Explain the roles and functions of Media in democratic society.
2. Give some situations that show the functions of media in the society.
3. Discuss current issues in Philippine media.

Value Focus: Be able to have awareness on the current issues in Philippine Media

Learning Competencies:
1. Identify the functions of communication and media
2. Discuss the role and functions of Media in a democratic society
3. Editorialize the roles and functions of media in democratic society.
4. Identify and discuss the current issues in Philippine media and
evaluate the impact of these issues to Philippine Democracy.

Guide Questions:
1. Name the symbolism used in the cartoon.
2. What is the meaning/understanding of the cartoon?

A. Functions of Communication

1. Monitoring Function - it informs citizens of what is happening around them


Ex: in terms of natural disasters, war, health crisis, etc. broadcast media (tv patrol,
24 hours, and etc.)
2. Information Function - educate the audience as to the meaning and
significance of the “facts”, ability of media to teach various norms, rules and
values.
Ex: watching educative or documentary shows/ programs like matanglawin, super
book, mathinik etc.

3. Opinion Function – provide a platform for public political discourse,


facilitating the formation of “public opinion” and feeding back to the public from
where it came.
Ex: Political forums live debates, hearings and speeches.

3. Watchdog role of Journalism – gives publicity to governmental and political


institutions.
Ex: Pork Barrel scandal, (bantay kaban, GMA special report). Bayan mo Ipatrol
mo, (ABS-CBN/SMNI election coverage)

4. Serves as the channel for the Advocacy of Political Viewpoints


Ex: SONA media coverage.

B. Current Issues on Philippine Media


Guide questions:
1. What is you understanding of the information shown in the info-graphics?
2. What is the implication of journalist being killed in the Philippines?
3. Do you agree that media killings are a danger to Philippine democracy? Why
or why not?
