Subject – Process Dynamics & Control

Max. Marks:20 Time: 09.00 AM to 1.00 PM

Note: 1. Solve all questions with the internal choices given.

2. Use of graph paper is permitted.

I. (a) A thermometer having input amplitude of variation 2 0C ; time

constant of 0.1min., frequency of oscillation 10/ π cycles/min.
subjected to sinusoidal variation about its average temp. of 1000C
sketch the response. (2)

(b) A tank having a cross sectional area 2 m2 is operating at steady

state with an inlet flow rate of 2 m3 / min. The flow head character is
shown in Fig. (2)

(i) Find the transfer function H(s) / Q(s)

(ii) If the flow to the tank is increases from 2 to 2.2 m3 / min according
to step change. Calculate the level ‘h’, 2 min after the change occurs.

(II) (a) A CSTR has the hold up of 1.5 hr and a reaction rate constant of 2 hr -1.
Find the exit concentration as a function of time if there is sudden change
in the feed concentration from 0.4 to 0.5 moles/ m3 .Assume inlet flow
rate same as the exit flow rate and equal to 1 m3/hr. (2)
(b) A step change of magnitude 4 is introduced into a system having
transfer function. (2)
