I. OBJECTIVES

CONTENT STANDARDS:
Demonstrates understanding of key concepts, uses and importance of
Statistics, data collection/gathering and the different forms of data
representation, measures of central tendency, measures of variability, and
probability.
LEARNERS’ STANDARDS:
The learner is able to collect and organize data systematically and
compute accurately measures of central tendency and variability and apply
these appropriately in data analysis and interpretation in different fields.
LEARNING COMPETENCY:

1. illustrates the measures of central tendency (mean, median, and mode) of a


statistical data. ( M7SP-IVf-1)
2. calculates the measures of central tendency of ungrouped data (M7SP-IVf-g-
1)
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:
a. Define the mean, median and mode;
b. Calculate the measure of central tendency of the ungrouped data.
c. Apply the measure of central tendency in real life situations.

#1 UNGROUPED DATA – data given as individual data points
1. MEAN- (also known as the arithmetic mean /
AVERAGE) is the most commonly used measure of
central position. It is the sum of measures x divided
by the number N of measures in a variable. It is
symbolized a X (read as “X- bar”)

Example: Consider Kayle scores in math activities.


Here are his scores: 5, 8, 7, 6, 10
What is average of the scores?
Solution: X =
∑ x = 5+8+6 +6+10 =7
N 5
Therefore the X is 7.
2. MEDIAN - is the middle value in a set of data. It is
~
symbolized as ( X ) (read as “X – tilde).
*Remember: to get the median, the data set must
arrange first to either ascending or descending order.
Example 1: Consider Kayle scores in math activities.
Here are his scores: 5, 8, 7, 6, 10
Solution: arrange the data set
5, 6, 7, 8,10

Therefore, the X = 7
Example 2: Incase there is no exact middle value
Consider Kayle scores in math activities.
Here are his scores: 5, 8, 7, 6, 9, 10
Solution: arrange the data set
5, 6, 7, 8, 9,10

3. MODE - is the measure or value which occurs most


frequently in a set of data. It is the value with the
greatest frequency. It is symbolized as ( ^ X ¿ (read as
“X-hat”). To find the mode for set of data:
1. Select the measure that appears most often in the
set; (ONE MODE)
2. If two or more measures appear the same number
of times, then each of these values is a mode; and (2
OR MORE MODE)
3. If every measure appears the same number of
times, then the set of data has no mode. (NO MODE)
Example 1:
Consider Kayle scores in math activities.
Here are his scores: 5, 8, 7, 6, 9, 10
What is the mode?
No mode, since there is no repeated value
Example 2:
Consider Kayle scores in math activities.
Here are his scores: 5, 8, 7, 7, 6, 9, 10, 10
What is the mode?
