Objectives Evaluating the suitability of a computer system. Computer System Specification The system’s specifications include its processing speed, memory, secondary storage, types of software and input/output devices. Processing Speed Processing speed, at a basic level, is how quickly a microprocessor operates. The specification of a computer will certainly include the CPU speed measured in hertz and expressed as megahertz (a million hertz) or gigahertz (a billion hertz) Users can purchase the computer most suitable for needs, depending on whether they need fast speeds, or more memory. To illustrate, the detailed specifications for the Intel range are shown in Table below;
Processor Price (US$) Number of cores CPU Speed L3 Cache
i9-9900k 529 8 3.6Ghz 16MB
i7-9700k 399 8 3.7Ghz 12MB
i5-9600k 299 6 3.7Ghz 9MB
i3-9350KF 173 4 4.0Ghz 8MB
Desktop computer system specifications.
Clearly the overall processing power of i9 processor with eight cores is greater than that of an i3 with only four cores, even though their CPU speeds are similar Memory
Main memory is the functional
unit of a computer that stores data and instructions being used by CPU. Memory Main memory is also known as primary storage or just memory. In addition to main memory modern micro processors have a small amount of extremely fast memory built into the processor. This L3 cache memory significantly improve the micro processor performance and helps to explain why an I9 processor with 16 MB of L3 cache vastly out preforms and I3 processor with only 8MB of L3 cache. It is often possible to improve performance by adding more main memory to computer system, by inserting extra memory modules into expansion slots on the computer main mother broad. Secondary Storage (Capacity and Speed The secondary storage is being considered here is the internal storage of the computer system that store data even when the computer is turned off. It is common for a new computers to be delivered with a single large-capacity or disc drive installed. There are two main types of disk drive: Solid State Drive (SSD): very fast and robust but expensive per GB ❖ Hard Disk Drive (HDD): slow and less robust but must cheaper per GB Secondary Storage (Capacity and Speed A higher-specification desk top computer might include two internal disc drive. The first disc drive, a fast SSD is used to store the operating system, system utility and all the application programs. The second disc drive, and HDD, will be used to store all the user’s data. Types of Software We have seen that all computers need an operating system to manage the user interface, processes, security, memory, files and hardware and resources. System utilities also need as these assist in maintaining and improving the efficiency of a computer system. In addition, application programs are the software that performs end user task, for eg word processing, data base, video editing and spreadsheet. The application program install will depend on the intended use of the computer system for the software to run smoothly a computer system needs to have sufficient performance. Performance can be measured in terms of processing speed, amount of internal memory and the amount of secondary storage. Some application programs, video editing for eg, require high performance computer system to run efficiently. Input and Output Device One point to note when choosing between different monitors is that the quoted size of a screen is measured as diagonal distance of the viewable area. Type of visual display unit include LEDS (light emitting diodes) and order-style CRTS (cathode ray tube) and LCDS (liquid crystal display). Suggested specifications for different uses Assessment Suggest one way to improve the performance of a computer system Suggest the main reason that someone might choose an I5 processor instead of an I9 processor Suggest one advantage of using a solid-state disk instead of an hard disk Suggest one advantage of using a hard disk drive instead of solid disk drive References Campbell, H., & Wood, A.
