Reading as a learning method
The reading process is of great help for language learning because it allows us to
develop in various areas.
1. Reading to learn the language: When we read, we not only test our
knowledge of vocabulary or grammar, but the way it is used in the text to
allow understanding of the text in a certain context. We can see the
complete picture of the use of the language.
2. Reading to instruct ourselves about the content: Usually, we tend to
read in our native language in order to appropriate the information and
obtain a good understanding of it. We must not forget that we get the same
benefit when reading in another language, in fact, we can be surprised to
access new information that was not available in our native language,
making reading in another language more satisfying.
3. Reading for general culture and awareness: Reading the same content in
the same language spoken by a native of that language, allows us to
introduce ourselves to their lifestyles and routines. It allows us to delve into
their culture and avoid making false judgments about the culture that speaks
the studied language.
When we read, let’s try to do the following four steps:
a) Connect prior knowledge with the topic being read. Try to predict or connect
the various points of the topic.
b) Select the most relevant information, discard the least relevant. This allows
us to learn short-term information.
c) Use an appropriate reading strategy for our learning. In order to facilitate the
learning process.
d) Check the absorption of the topic during and after reading, this allows us to
evaluate the retention of information, likewise, reinforce the parts that cause
us the most difficulty.
Types of Reading:
There are five levels or types of reading technique: Skimming, Scanning, Intensive
Reading, Extensive Reading, and Loud and Silent Reading.
I. SKIMMING
Is used to refer to that type of reading that tries to visually scan the text in order to
find some important information. That is, this technique is used when we want to
search for something very specific, such as a date or a figure, in an article that we
have previously read carefully.
Example:
When we want to talk to someone on the phone and we don’t have their cell phone
number on hand, we search our contacts, however we don’t want to have to read
all the names we have scheduled, we want specific information.
We follow the ordering system used precisely to facilitate the search for specific
information (in this case, alphabetical order) without being interested in the
remaining information.
III. INTENSIVE READING
When undertaking intensive reading, it is essential to have clear objectives in mind.
Intensive reading is more time consuming than scanning or skimming. It helps
language learners understand vocabulary in context and facilitates long-term
retention of information. Reading large amounts of information just before an exam
is not effective because students often neglect intensive reading, which affects
memory retention.
IV. EXTENSIVE READING
When we read for pleasure, we are engaging in extensive reading. In this case,
students are unlikely to immerse themselves in a text they don't like. The key here
is to be able to decode and assimilate the content smoothly. If the text is
complicated and we stop often to understand what is being said or look up new
words in the dictionary, our concentration suffers.
V. LOUD AND SILENT READING:
When we read silently every day, we are trying to extract the meaning from the
passage. However, when we read aloud, our attention is divided between reading
and speaking. This can make comprehension difficult and affect our concentration.
Reading aloud is necessary in situations such as announcements or circulars.
ANSWER
(a) What do you understand by reading techniques?
Reading techniques refer to methods and strategies for reading and
understanding text efficiently.
(b) What are the different strategies for developing reading skills?
Different strategies for developing reading skills may include extensive and
silent reading, regular practice, vocabulary building, and reading
comprehension.
