That Sugar Film
1. Discuss your initial reaction to the film. Did you find the evidence and format in which the film was presented
to be compelling and convincing, or was the comical approach dissuading?
 The film was informative in a way that it gives more information that catches the viewers interest,
especially people who were diabetic. The comical approach gives spices to the documentary that it does
not give off boredom when watching.

2. What is your relationship to sugar? Do you know how much sugar you consume on a daily basis? Do you
consider yourself a healthy eater?
 Sugar is what makes my coffee sweet, I do not measure my consumption on sugar. I could say that I am a
healthy eater because I eat a lot of vegetable and we seldomly eat meat.

3. Did you find the information offered up in the film to be shocking or were you aware of the role sugar plays in
the contemporary life? Discuss.
 I am shocked because I did not know that sugar plays a vital role in our life. I know that too much sugar
can cause diabetes, I also know that we need sugar to help our body but I did not know that sugar not only
serves as a source of energy, but also support life as a structural component in cells.

4. Why do you believe Americans have such a disproportionately unbalances relationship to sugar, as compared
to the rest of the world? What is it about American culture/life that feeds the unhealthy overconsumption of
the sweet stuff?
 They substitute corn to sugar because high fructose corn syrup is artificially cheap in the United States so
they put it in everything, even in bread so people eat it without even realizing it.

5. Discuss the notion that “sugar is the new tobacco”. Do you believe sugar should be taxed, as cigarettes and
other nicotine products are today? Are we headed towards a sugar-driven health crisis?
 “Sugar is the new tobacco”, as we all know, we Filipinos love to eat sweets especially when these sweets
were pasalubong from family who works abroad. I believe that there is no need to taxed sugar. It is one of
the main ingredients to desserts of Filipinos therefore I would say that we are not heading to sugar-driven
crisis because sugar is being used even way back before.

6. What was your relationship with sugar when you were a child? How much sugar were you allowed? How has
this affected your adult relationship to sugar?
 We came from a poor family that’s why my mother does not indulge use to consume sweets. Now that I
am an adult, I do not eat sweets only when I like to eat.

7. What experience do you have with mood swings, and to what do you attribute these emotional variations? I
which ways do you think your diets affects your mood? Do you ever use sugar as a pick-me-up? If not, what
ways do you increase your energy levels?
 I am not a moody person because I have a long patience that’s why I never tried to eat sweets when I am
in my mood. I drink energy drink to boost my energy level every time I am tired.

that some fruit smoothies contain as much as Coca-Cola? Why is there such a gap between
education/knowledge and general public when it comes to what we put in our bodies?
 No, there are only some individuals that are to conscious with their sugar intake. There is a need to have a
gap between knowledge to general public when it comes to sugar intake so that factories that produces
sweets will not be in the verge of bankruptcy. When people has the knowledge to be conscious to what
they eat then problem will arose to economy in terms of producing sweets.

9. Would you be interested in attempting a 30-day sugar-free diet? How do you think you would fare? Do you
consider yourself a sugar addict?
 No, I would not be interested because we need sugar to be fit. I would not consider myself as a sugar
addict because I only indulge myself with sweets when needed.
10. What can you do-on a simple everyday level-to make an impact on the amount of sugar in the average diet?
 As a students who needs to be fit, walking to and fro to school is a simple exercise that can help be to be
fit at all times. Excessive eating of sugar can cause a lot of problem in our health but when we exercise
and burn these sugar intake then there is a possibility that we can be fit even if we binge eating.
