A SYNOPSIS FOR THE RESEARCH PAPER ON THE TOPIC CHINA FACTOR IN

INDIA-NEPAL RELATIONS SUBMITTED BY NIVEDITHA.YERRAGUNTA.

“POWER” is always one thing that all the nations aim for domestically and also in the
international sphere. But the extent at which nations run behind this power varies and
China along with U.S.A,Russia, and other powerful countries is so desperate to have its
influence, control over other nations and especially the still developing nations or also
called third world nations( a term given by the west). In the post world war era it was
mostly the west who were having influence over the colonial nations but today nations
like India,China,Indonesia,Brazil,Japan and many Asian,Latin American,African nations
are also having a change in the global image.China is a emerging global superpower in
terms of trade, investment,FDI,and is trying to bring initiatives like the BRI(Belt and Road
Initiative),though referred to as an initiative which targets connectivity and cooperation
should be seen as a programme that results in the growing footprints of china's
strategies in various nations. In Order to achieve its aim China is willing to fund as much
as it can to not just its neighboring nations but also to the african, latin american nations
that are in need of financial funds for the programmes in their nations. Here Nepal
becomes a crucial neighbor for both China and India. For China,Nepal is crucial
1.)because of its geographical location to have its socio-cultural dominance and Nepal
also shares open border with India.2. China's footprints in Nepal will give an opportunity
to china to send its goods and products(MADE IN CHINA) and also reflect its influence
as a global superpower.China's aim for this is very clear and it is also using the soft
power tools like the BRI,educational policies,spreading anti-India
sentiments,people-people contacts etc which will be discussed in the paper.

2.)AIM OF THE RESEARCH PAPER:

My research paper will be looking at the influence, dominance and the strategies China
implements in the neighboring nation Nepal and how the India-Nepal relations are
taking a leftward shift after turbulent times ijn 2015 between both the nations. This
became a golden opportunity for china to make MOU’s,agreements,in-roads and also
spreading anti-India sentiment in the local level which disturbed Nepal’s relations with
India.A shift in Nepal’s relations is crucial for India in 2 ways 1.)India will face security
issues in the mere future because it shares an open border (1850 km) with five Indian
states,2.India's global image as a Big Brother for south Asian nations is crucial because
i have a very optimistic way of future India.Looking at the recent India’s presidency of G
20,it’s active participation in various world forums gives India a chance to create a new
global image for itself and that is why dealing with neighbors using the
NEIGHBORHOOD FIRST POLICY takes the center stage. My paper also takes into
consideration the recent Nepal prime minister Prachanda's visit and tries to look at the
change in the relations between India-Nepal and the change in Nepal’s diplomatic way
of dealing with its neighboring countries by utilizing the opportunities that were given by
both India and China.

REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE:

A decent bank of literature from South Asian,International authors, think tanks is

available on the China factor in India-Nepal relation. While I was reviewing the articles,i
found out that most of the authors though were talking about the china's influence in
Nepal but it is important to look at it from India's perspective which means China's
influence in South Asia will affect India's global image as big brother and the relations
will also take a leftward shift attracting more towards China. Here Nepal becomes
important for both the nations because of its dependence on foreign support, aids from
both the nations. My research is mainly focussing on the post 2013(After introducing the
Belt and Road Initiative) and the soft power which china is weaponizing in nepal which
eventually is a threat to India.

Statement of problem:

Most of the South Asian nations which are neighboring to India are very vulnerable to
any influence through soft power because they are still developing and stable
institutions are still not installed which makes them dependent on foreign countries. For
china i would say this is a golden opportunity to intervene by providing them aids, loans
and attract them with the FDI.Nepal too is a nation as i said earlier is dependent on the
neighboring nations (india ,china) and china's relations with nepal could be a threat to
India and India thus have to introduce a 1.stable Neighborhood policy that involves
much coordination with our neighbors.
2.Should not intertwine the party interest with the national interest in the international
sphere (referring here the 2015 blockade between India-Nepal)

Tentative Chapterization:

Chapter1:
In this chapter, I will be looking in detail about China’s Belt and Road Initiative especially
in Nepal China's influence in Nepal through China’s BRI - is it helpful to nepal and other
south asian nations or is it just a strategy to spread China's footprints.

Chapter2:In this chapter my main focal point will be about the soft power that is
instrumental as a weapon by China to achieve its goal.Post-2015 as i already
mentioned the disturbance between India-Nepal is disturbed due to various issues like
the Kalapani incident, blockade in 2015 which will be latter discussed. This lead to
intense anti-India sentiment amongst the Nepalese.

Chapter3:In this chapter I will be dealing with how China’s influence is a threat to
1.India's security 2.It’s image in the global forum as a big brother for South Asian
Nations.

Chapter 4:In this chapter as i mentioned earlier i have a very optimistic way of Future
India as a super power in South Asia and looking at the recent trends India’s way of
acting diplomatically will definitely change the global image too.It is important for India to
thus have a strong neighborhood policy.

Chapter5:In this chapter I will be focussing on the recent visit of Nepal Prime minister
Prachanda’s to India. In this chapter I will also be talking about a change in Nepal’s
diplomatic way of dealing with India and China.

Conclusion:

My research paper in overall tries to look at the China factor(dominance, influence and

intervention through various means) in Nepal as it is crucial not just for India but also to
the South Asian nations as China's actions in the Indo-pacific region poses threat to the
still developing nations who are much more vulnerable to fall for the chinese
strategies. The Chinese strategies are not just limited to nation level but these target the
local level too which is crucial to understand.Since these strategies are targeting directly
the people,India should also act accordingly in a diplomatic way to keep up with it’s
global image in today’s growing world order.
