Question 1. Use Gaussian elimination to solve the following systems.

 −3x1 + 2x2 + 4x3 = 12

(a) x1 − 2x3 = −4

2x1 − 3x2 + 4x3 = −3

 x1 + 2x3 = 1

(b) x2 + x3 = 0 .

2x1 + 4x3 = 1

 2x1 + 4x2 + 6x3 = 8

(c) x1 + 2x2 + 4x3 = 8

3x1 + 6x2 + 9x3 = 12

 x4 − x5 = 3
(d) x3 − x5 = 2

x1 − x2 + 4x5 = 2

 2x1 + 4x2 − 2x3 + 2x4 + 4x5 = 2

 x1 + 2x2 − x3 + 2x4 = 4
(e)

 3x1 + 6x2 − 2x3 + x4 + 9x5 = 1
5x1 + 10x2 − 4x3 + 5x4 + 9x5 = 9

 x1 − x2 + x3 − x4 = 0

 x1 − x2 + x3 + x4 = 0
(f)

 4x1 − 4x2 + 4x3 = 0
−2x1 + 2x2 − 2x3 + x4 = 0

 2x2 + 2x3 + 3x4 = 1
(g) 2x1 + 4x2 + 6x3 + 7x4 = 3

x1 + x2 + 2x3 + 2x4 = −4

Question 2 Find the Rank and Nullity of each of the system given above.

Question 3 Consider the system 

 y + 2kz = 0
x + 2y + 6z = 2 ,

kx + 2z = 1

where k is an arbitrary constant.

(a) For which values of the constant k does this system have a unique solution?

(b) When is there no solution?

(c) When are there infinitely many solutions?

Question 4 Consider the system 
 x1 + 2x2 + ax3 = 0

2x1 + bx2 = 0 ,

3x1 + 2x2 + x3 = 0

For what values of a and b the system has unique solutions.

Question 4 Determine the values of a for which the system has no solutions, exactly one solution,
or infinitely many solutions. 

 x + 2y − 3z = 4
3x − y + 5z = 2 .
 2
4x + y + (a − 14)z = a + 2
