Whales are the largest animals in the world, and the gentlest creatures we know. Although the whale is very huge, it is not
hindered at all by its size when it is in the water. Whales have tails that end like flippers. With just a gentle flick, it can propel
itself forward. The skin of a whale is so smooth that it does not create any friction that can slow the whale down. A whale’s
breathing hole is located on the top of its head, so it can breathe without having to completely push its head out of the water.
Whales are protected from the cold seawater by body fat that is called blubber.
Whales live in the ocean but, in terms of behaviours, they are more similar to humans than fish. They live in family groups and
they even travel in groups when they have to migrate from cooler to warmer waters. The young stay with their parents for as long
as fifteen years. Whales are known not to
desert the ill or injured members; instead, they cradle them.
When whales are in danger, there are people who go to great lengths to help them. One such case occurred in 1988, when three
young whales were trapped in the sea. It was close to winter and the sea had begun to freeze over. Whales are mammals that
require oxygen from the air, so the frozen ice was a great danger to them. All they had then was a tiny hole in the ice for them to
breathe through. Volunteers from all over soon turned up to help these creatures. They cut holes in the ice to provide more
breathing holes for the whales. These holes would also serve as guides for the whales so that they could swim to warmer waters.

Pollutants are clogging up the atmosphere above our planet and trapping the sun's heat. That makes our planet warmer, which
causes glaciers to melt, crazy weather patterns to develop, and natural disasters spread like wildfires.
But there are other consequences that people don't always associate with climate change. One
surprising fact about global warming is that it makes people more aggressive.
As the world gets hotter, tempers also get fierier. A new study found that violent crimes and even war become more likely as
temperatures rise. Heart rates tend to be elevated in warm weather, so people are prepped for a physical response to a situation.
That’s not to say we're headed for a violent end as Earth warms up, though. Advances in everything from technology to health
have sparked a decline in conflict. It's just that global warming might be slowing that decline.
Question 29. According to the paragraph 1, all of the following are results of our planet getting warmer EXCEPT _______.
A. Melting glaciers B. Increasing greenhouse gas
C. Natural disasters like wildfires D. Crazy weather patterns to develop
Question 30. One surprising fact about global warming is that _______.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct option that best fits
each of the numbered blanks from 34 to 40.
Pollution emitted in industrial areas represents a threat to human health and the surrounding natural resources. We have a tendency
to believe that the production processes are the only source of environmental damage, and often forget about the possible long-
term effects of harmful production practices. We may think that the closure of these huge industrial areas would improve the
quality of the environment. Unfortunately, this ignores the threat of the remaining waste, which is abandoned and poorly stored. It
represents an even bigger danger because it stands neglected as it degrades and leaks into the earth without any control at all.
Changes in the water chemistry due to surface water contamination can affect all levels of an ecosystem. It can affect the health of
lower food chain organisms and, consequently, the availability of food up through the food chain. It can damage the health of
wetlands and damage their ability to support healthy ecosystems, control flooding, and filter pollutants from storm water runoff.
The health of animals and humans are affected when they drink or bathe in contaminated water. In addition water-based
organisms, like fish and shellfish, can pile up and concentrate contaminants in their bodies. When other animals or humans eat
these organisms, they receive a much higher dose of contaminant than they would have if they had been directly exposed to the
original contamination.
Contaminated groundwater can badly affect animals, plants and humans if it is removed from the ground by man-made or natural
processes. Depending on the study of rocks of the area, groundwater may rise to the surface through springs or seeps, flow
sideways into nearby rivers, streams, or ponds, or sink deeper into the earth. In many parts of fhe world, groundwater is pumped
out of the ground to be used for drinking, bathing, other household uses, agriculture, and industry.
Contaminants in the soil can harm plants when they take up the contamination through their roots. Eating, breathing in, or
touching contaminated soil, as well as eating plants or animals that have piled up soil contaminants can badly affect the health of
humans and animals.

each of the numbered blanks from 29 to 33.
Since the early eighties, we have been only too aware of the devastating effects of large-scale environmental pollution. Such
pollution is generally the result of poor government planning in many developing nations or the shortsighted, selfish policies of the
already industrialized countries, which encourage a minority of the world’s population to squander the majority of its natural
resources.
While events such as the deforestation of the Amazon jungle or the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl continue to receive high media
exposure, as do acts of environmental sabotage, it must be remembered that not all pollution is on this grand scale. A large
proportion of the world's pollution has its source much closer to home. The recent spillage of crude oil from an oil tanker
accidentally discharging its cargo straight into Sydney not only caused serious damage to the harbor foreshores but also created
severely toxic fumes which hung over the suburbs for days and left the angry residents wondering how such a disaster could have
been allowed to happen.
Avoiding pollution can be a fulltime job. Try not to inhale traffic fumes; keep away from Chemical plants and building-sites; wear
a mask when cycling. It is enough to make you want to stay at home. But that, according to a growing body of scientific evidence,
would also be a bad idea. Research shows that levels of pollutants such as hazardous gases, particulate matter and other chemical
'nasties’ are usually higher indoors than out, even in the most polluted cities. Since the average American spends 18 hours indoors
for every hour outside, it looks as though many environmentalists may be attacking the wrong target.
Question 29: The best title for this passage could be
A: the devastating effects of environmental pollution in some areas.
B: environmental pollution as a result of poor policies.
C: indoor pollution. D: deforestation of the Amazon jungle.

each of the numbered blanks from 34 to 40.
It is commonly believed in the United States that school is where people go to get an education. Nevertheless, it has been said that
today children interrupt their education to go to school. The distinction between schooling and education implied by this remark
is importantt
Education is much more open-ended and all-inclusive than schooling. Education knows no bounds. It can take place
anywhere, whether in the shower or on the job, whether in a kitchen or on a tractor. It includes both the formal learning that takes
place in schools and the whole universe of informal learning. The agents of education can range from a revered grandparent to the
people debating politics on the radio, from a child to a distinguished scientist.Whereas schooling has a certain predictability,
education quite often produces surprises. A chance conversation with a stranger may lead a person to discover how little is known
of other religions. People are engaged in education in infancy. Education, then, is a very broad, inclusive term. It is a lifelong
process, a process that starts long before the start of school, and one that should be an integral part of one's entire life.
Schooling, on the other hand, is a specific, formalized process, whose general pattern varies little from one setting to the
next. Throughout a country, children arrive at school at approximately the same time, take assigned seats, are taught by an adult,
use similar textbooks, do homework, take exams, and so on. The slices of reality that are to be learned, whether they are the
alphabet or an understanding of the workings of government, have usually been limited by the boundaries of the subjects being
taught. For example, high school students know that they are not likely to find out in their classes the truth about political
problems in their communities or what the newest filmmakers are experimenting with. There are definite conditions surrounding
the formalized process of schooling.

Question 34: What is the main idea of the passage?

D. All of people's life is an education.

each of the numbered blanks from 29 to 33.
It's often said that we learn things at the wrong time. University students frequently do the minimum of work because they're crazy
about a good social life instead. Children often scream before their piano practice because it's so boring. They have to be given
gold stars and medals to be persuaded to swim, or have to be bribed to take exams. But the story is different when you're older.
For starters, I was paying, so there was no reason to be late — I was the one frowning and drumming my fingers if the tutor was
late, not the other way round. Indeed, if I could persuade him to linger for an extra five minutes, it was a bonus, not a nuisance. I
wasn't frightened to ask questions, and homework was a pleasure not a pain.
Some people fear going back to school because they worry that their brains have got rusty. But the joy is that, although some parts
have rusted up, your brain has learnt all kinds of other things since you were young. It has learnt to think independently and
flexibly and is much better at relating one thing to another. What you lose in the rust department, you gain in the maturity
department.
In some ways, age is a positive plus. For instance, when you're older, you get less frustrated. Experience has told you that, if you're
calm and simply do something carefully again and again, eventually you'll get the hang of it. The confidence you have in other
areas — from being able to drive a car, perhaps — means that if you can't, say, build a chair instantly, you don't, like a child, want
to destroy your first pathetic attempts. Maturity tells you that you will, with application, eventually get there.
I hated piano lessons at school, but I was good at music. And coming back to it, with a teacher who could explain why certain
exercises were useful and with musical concepts that, at the age of ten, I could never grasp, was magical. Initially, I did feel a bit
strange, thumping out a piece that I'd played for my school exams, with just as little comprehension of what the composer intended
as I'd had all those years before. But soon, complex emotions that I never knew poured out from my fingers, and suddenly I could
understand why practice makes perfect.

Improving girls’ educational levels has been demonstrated to have clear impacts on the health and economic future of young
women, which in turn improves the prospects of their entire community. The infant mortality rate of babies whose mothers have
received primary education is half that of children whose mothers are illiterate. In the poorest countries of the world, 50% of girls
do not attend secondary school. Yet, research shows that every extra year of school for girls increases their lifetime income by
15%. Improving female education, and thus the earning potential of women, improves the standard of living for their own
children, as women invest more of their income in their families than men do. Yet, many barriers to education for girls remain. In
some African countries, such as Burkina Faso, girls are unlikely to attend school for such basic reasons as a lack of private latrine
facilities for girls.
Higher attendance rates of high schools and university education among women, particularly in developing countries, have helped
them make inroads to professional careers with better-paying salaries and wages. Education increases a woman's (and her partner
and the family's) level of health and health awareness. Furthering women's levels of education and advanced training also tends to
lead to later ages of initiation of sexual activity and first intercourse, later age at first marriage, and later age at first childbirth, as
well as an increased likelihood to remain single, have no children, or have no formal marriage and alternatively, have increasing
levels of long-term partnerships. It can lead to higher rates of barrier and chemical contraceptive use (and a lower level of sexually
transmitted infections among women and their partners and children), and can increase the level of resources available to women
who divorce or are in a situation of domestic violence. It has been shown, in addition, to increase women's communication with
their partners and their employers, and to improve rates of civic participation such as voting or the holding of office.
