Preface
This Geotechnical Practice Publication (GPP) constitutes the proceedings of GEO 2004:
Advances in Geotechnical Engineering with Emphasis on Dam Engineering conference held
in Irbid, Jordan, July 12-15, 2004. It is jointly sponsored by the Geo-Institute of ASCE,
Jordan University of Science & Technology, Louisiana State University, University of Akron,
Hashemite University, and Gulf Society for Geoengineering (GS4GE).
The importance of "water" in the Middle East and other predominantly arid regions is
paramount, and geotechnics with emphasis on "dam engineering" is the key to efficient,
reliable and economic construction and maintenance of geo-structures that are used to collect,
contain and manage this elixir of life. The papers contained within this publication entitled
Geo Jordan 2004: Advances in Geotechnical Engineering with Emphasis on Dams, Highway
Materials, and Soil Improvement cover many facets of the subject including (i) design of
filters for dams; (ii) monitoring and rehabilitation of dams, embankments, and geo-structures;
(iii) improvement of soil properties using geosynthetics and chemical stabilization; (iv) use of
TDR and other geophysical methods to detect pollutants in soils and to assess properties of
embankments; and (v) modeling the constitutive behavior of soils and fluid flow through
granular materials.
All the papers accepted for this ASCE Geotechnical Practice Publication were peer
reviewed by at least one reviewer and went through two iterations before reaching the
publication stage. The papers are eligible for discussion in the Journal of Geotechnical and
Geoenvironmental Engineering and for ASCE award nomination.
Finally, the editors of this publication express appreciation to the advisory committee
members, technical committee members and to all reviewers and authors who made this
publication possible. At the risk on leaving some deserving names off our list, we wish to
recognize Robert Liang, George Voyiadjis, Mehmet Tumay, Dante Fratta, Izzaldin Almoh'd,
and Nezar Hammouri for managing the papers' review process. Special thanks to the
members of the Technical committee of Geo-Institute, to Carol Bowers, and to Donna
Dicker!
