Assignment 3

Q. 1 considering two independent samples of following details, test the hypothesis that µ1 = µ2 at 5%
level of significance.

1)

Sample Size Sample Mean Population S.D.

15 980 75
8 1012 80

2)

Sample Size Sample Mean Population S.D.

Q. 2 Samples of two types of electric bulbs were tested for length of life and following data were
obtained.

Type I Type II
No. of Samples 8 7
Mean of samples (in hrs) 1134 1024
S. D. (in hrs) 35 40
Test at 5% level of significance whether the difference in sample means is significant. (Table value t
for d.f. = 13 is 2.16).

Q. 3 Two types of anti-biotics were tested on two groups of patients for curing a particular disease
and following data were obtained.

Type A Type B
No. of Patients 6 6
Mean Period (in days) 13.55 10.10
S. D. (in days) 35 40
Use 5% level of significance to test the null hypothesis that the difference in the mean period of the
two drugs is significant.

Q. 4 The heights in inches of randomly chosen 6 sailors and 10 soldiers are as follows:

Sailors 63 65 68 69 71 73
Soldiers 61 62 65 66 69 69 70 71 72 73
Test at 5% level of significance whether soldiers on an average are taller than sailors. (Table value of
t at 5% level of significance for d.f. = 14 is 2.145).

Q. 5 The following are the gain of weights of cows fed on two types of diets X and Y.

Diet X 30 37 35 37 29 19 37
Diet Y 29 39 27 35 47 37 45 35 37 40
Test at 5% level of significance whether two diets differ as regards their effect on mean increase in
weight. (Table value of t at 5% level of significance for d.f. = 15 is 2.131).
Q. 6 10 school boys were given a test in Statistics and their scores were recorded. They were given a
months’ special coaching and a second test was given to them in the same subject at the end of the
coaching period. Test if the marks given below give evidence to the fact that the students are
benefitted by coaching. (Critical value of t at 5% level of significance for d.f. = 9 is 2.262).

Q. 7 A sample of 400 students of undergraduate and 400 students of post-graduate classes was
taken to know their opinion about autonomous colleges. 290 of the under-graduate and 310 of the
post-graduate students favoured the autonomous status. Present these facts in the form of a table
and test at 5% level that the opinion regarding autonomous status of colleges is independent of the
level of classes of students.

Q. 8 In a survey of 200 boys of which 75 were intelligent, 40 had educated fathers, while 85 of the
unintelligent boys had uneducated fathers. Do these figures support the hypothesis that educated
fathers have intelligent boys? (Table value of χ2 at 5% level for 1 d.f. is 3.84)

Q. 9 A total of 3759 individuals were interviewed in a public opinion survey on a political proposal.
Of them, 1872 were men and the rest were women. A total of 2257 individuals were in favour of the

opposed to it. Do you justify or contradict the hypothesis that there is no association between
gender and attitude at 5% level of significance? (Table value of χ2 at 5% level for 1 d.f. is 3.84)
