ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATION

Q1

Among all of the respondents, 25% of homemakers are 50 years old or more, 25% are over 50
years, 20% are in the 40- 45 years range, 15% are in their early thirties ,10% in their late 30s while
5% of them are under 30 years of age. From this it can be seen that half of the respondents are 45
or more years old. Overall, it has been tried that the data is collected from homemakers of varied
ages, to understand their concept of hobbies and how they manage them with household chores in a
better manner.

Q2

100% of respondents are females so it can be interpreted that almost all of the homemakers in India
are females.
Q3

From the pie chart it can be understood that 65% of the respondents are undergraduates or have a
bachelor’s degree, 25%of respondents have masters degree and only 10% of respondents have
studied till 12th standard in school. From this data it can be interpreted that the majority of
homemakers are graduates, some of them have done post graduation, very few have studied till
only 12th grade in school and none of the respondents have a PhD.

Q4

Trend of nuclear families is on the rise in this generation. This fact is evident from the responses
received as well. 70% of the respondents live in a nuclear family and 30% live in a joint family.
Q5

According to the bar graph, 30% of the respondents love talking to people and trying out new
things and 10% of them like to be alone and talk less, 20% of them are family oriented and liketo
take care of their families , 15 % of them loves to spend their time in kitchen and experimenting
with the food or good at cooking and 15% of the respondents likes different physical activity to
stay fit and 10 % teaches or retired as a teacher.

Q6 a

As it can be seen from the pie chart, 70% of the homemakers like to engage in solo activities
while only 30% of them like pursuing group hobbies. Hence, the majority of them like those
activities which they can do by themselves, in their own time, with peace.
Q6 b

65% of the respondents like engaging in solo hobbies because they enjoy their personal time. They
feel that it is their quality time with oneself where they can be at peace, relax and discovermore
about themselves. 25% of the respondents like to socialize with the community that is why they
pursue group hobbies. 10% of the respondents do not have any reason to justify their choice of
choosing solo or group hobbies. From this it can be interpreted that the majority of the
homemakers need some time for themselves, for relaxation and being at peace, while some of
them take their breaks from household work by socializing and engaging in group activities.

Q7

40% of the respondents used to engage in fitness and wellbeing activities that include yoga,
exercising, dance etc. while they were growing up. 15% of the respondents had their taste inclined
towards music, playing instruments, and singing. 25% of the respondents loved to spend time
doing creative activities and artwork. 20% of the respondents used to spend their time traveling,
watching movies, and visiting different places while they were growing up. From this it can be
interpreted that everyone has different taste and liking towards hobbies they pursue while growing
up.
Q8

20% of the respondents like engaging in fitness and wellbeing activities that include yoga,
exercising, dance etc. 15% of the respondents like to do stitching. 10% of the respondents love to
spend time doing creative activities like artwork, making handicrafts, painting, etc. 15% of the
homemakers like doing gardening and spending time with plants. While remaining major 40% of
the respondents prefer pursuing other hobbies like traveling, teaching, watching movies, singing
etc. We can easily interpret that the majority of the respondents prefer a mix of different activities
as their hobbies and that almost all have developed new hobbies along with continuingtheir old
ones as they grew up. Another factor which can be observed is that there was a greater proportion
of them who used to engage in sports and fitness activities and as they have grown up, this
proportion has decreased from 40 % to 20%.

Q9

From the pie chart it can be observed that only 10% of the respondents spend 12 or more than 12
hours pursuing their hobbies along with doing household chores. While 35% of housewives spend
4-8 hours on hobbies in a week, 35% of them give 8-12 hours while the remaining 20% are able to
give less than 4 hours to their hobbies. It can be interpreted that the majority of the respondents up
to 70% are able to take out approximately only half or one hour per day for their hobbies.
Q10 a

According to the pie chart 75% of homemakers have responded positively with yes, showcasing
that their hobbies have changed because of them becoming homemakers. However, the remaining
25% of homemakers have responded that no such change has occurred for them.
Hence, for the majority of homemakers it’s a yes.

Q10b

Some of the reasons given by the homemakers for change in their hobbies include:
• Additional roles and responsibilities in their lives: taking care of family members,
becoming a mom or being the eldest daughter in law in the household.
• Time constraints; with an increase in workload than before, they find it difficult to take out
time for their hobbies.
• As they have grown as a person, with time the nature of hobbies they have been interested
in has changed. Majority of them said that now they prefer more calming and relaxing
activities as their hobbies.
Q11

From the pie chart we can understand that 45% of homemakers are sure that the hobbies that they
have invested their time in and developed, have had an impact on their personality ie. have
influenced and shaped it. However, 50% of the respondents are not sure about this fact and have
responded with maybe, while the remaining 5% have completely discarded that their hobbies have
had an effect on their personality.

Q12

From the bar graph it can be seen that 45% of the homemakers find it easy to manage giving time
to their hobbies along with the household chores, whereas 45 % of them find it neutral and 10 % of
the respondents find it very difficult. This indicates that the majority of them are able to manage
between the both while a few of them find managing both strenuous.
Q13

As from the given pie chart, we can observe that 70% of the respondents said that they manage to
take out time in comparison to the 30% of the respondents who find it difficult to manage their
time and take out some for their hobbies/themselves tells us that majority of the homemakers find
it significantly necessary to have some time during the day for their personal preferences.

Q14

The pie chart tells us that more than half of the respondents haven’t taken any workshops/classes
related to their hobbies whereas some of them do have taken workshops for the same which might
indicate that they developed those hobbies from the workshops/classes they took for the same.
Q15a

As we can witness that we have got responses in all the categories for this question, some of the
homemakers sometimes thought of generating an income and many of them think about it on a
regular basis. But the pie chart tells us that the majority of them didn’t want to carry their hobbies
as income generating activities.

Q15b

From the varied responses we have got, the factors that we can conclude for not pursuing themfor
income generation include that the homemakers wanted to keep their activities as mere hobbies
only and do not want to associate them with income generating activities, many of them had time
constraints or they had no specific reason. Some of them wanted to convert their passion into
business for helping out their families, going out and exploring.
OVERALL CONCLUSION
Construction, conduction and analysis of the interviews was a very interesting activity and a new
learning experience. All of us conducted 5 interviews each giving us exposure, ability to enhance
our communication skills, form rapports, network and understand the viewpoints of several
homemakers on their hobbies and their management with household chores. We got to know what
kind of hobbies they like to engage in, time they devote to them, what were their hobbies initially,
what are their current hobbies and why they think this change has come. We also learnt about how
they manage their time for taking care of their family, doing all the household chores as well as
taking out time for themselves to follow their passion. They made us realize that if one has the
dedication and willingness to do something then nothing can stop them from achieving their goals.
