Assignment Viii-2

The document contains four problems related to partial differential equations (PDEs). Problem 1 asks to classify different PDEs as linear/nonlinear and homogeneous/inhomogeneous. Problem 2 asks to find the general solution to four PDEs. Problem 3 shows that a given function is a solution to a boundary value problem for the PDE uxx + uyy = 0. Problem 4 shows another function is a solution to the same PDE.

Course Instructor: Dr. Manoj K. Rajpoot

1. Classify the following partial differential equations (PDEs) as Linear Homogeneous, Linear
Inhomogeneous or Nonlinear. For nonlinear equations, further indicate if they are Semilinear or
Quasilinear:
i. ut + xux − u = 0 ii. ut + ux − u2 = 0 iii. ut + uux + x = 0
iv. 2 sin ut + ux = 0 v. ut + ux + u2 = 0 vi. ut + uxxx + uux = 0
vii. ut + xux = 0 viii. ut + uux = 0 ix. ut + 2uux = 0
x. u2x + u2y = 1 xi. ut + ux = 0 xii. uxx + uyy = 0
xiii. uxx + uyy = x2 + y 2 xiv. ut + x2 ux = 0
2. Find the general solution of the following PDEs:
i. uxxy = 0
ii. uxyz = sin x + sin y sin z
iii. uxy = 2ux + ex+y
iv. uxy + ux = 0

3. Show that, un (x, y) = exp (ny − n) sin nx, is a solution of the following Boundary value
problem (BVP):

uxx + uyy = 0, x ∈ R, y > 0

u(0, y) = 0, uy (x, 0) = n exp (− n) sin nx, n is a positive integer

4. Show that, un (x, y) = sin nx sinh ny, is a solution to the following PDE:

uxx + uyy = 0, n is an integer
