THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

INTRODUCTION

Rationale of the Study

With improper waste management outcomes several difficulties: illnesses,

pollution, etc. Waste management is the absolute process of handling, processing,

transporting, storage, recycling and disposal of human, industrial and environmental

waste. Waste management is a global phenomenon, but its portions are more

prominent in developing countries.

Solid waste management which is a very massive task is getting more

complicated with rise in urbanization, overpopulation, social and economic growth, etc.

Institutional fragility, financial constraints and public attitude towards waste management

has made the issue even worse.

There are several methods of waste management and some of the most

common methods are recycling, composting, waste to energy, etc. However, waste

minimization is the simplest method of waste management; create less waste. Waste

reduction can be done by everyone by reducing the waste creation and recycling and

reusing the old materials.

Concrete example of that is using a recyclable material as a trash bag which can

help minimize the waste a student can produce in school. By doing so, it can help the

environmental development of the school since instead of throwing their waste

anywhere or in the bin—which adds the amount of uncontrollable garbage inside the

campus—they can bring it at home and for their parents to monitor whether their child

bought healthy or unhealthy foods.

Many researchers (Alshuwaikhat and Abubakar, 2008; Abd-Razak et al., 2012)

agree with Smyth, Fredeen and Booth (2010) that reducing the burden of solid waste

and

managing it effectively and efficiently is the first step towards “greening” a university or

campus sustainability. Accumulated evidence indicates that an increasing number of

universities have actively joined the sustainable campus movement by introducing

programs that, among other things, address waste management attitudes and practices

(Zhang et al., 2011; Finlay and Massey, 2012; Khan, 2013; ISCN Secretariat, 2014). In

Europe and America, such campus-based activities are rooted in major declarations and

resolutions such as the Tallories Declaration on Sustainable Universities (1990) and the

Luneburg Declaration on Higher Education for Sustainable Development (2001).

Universities in Africa, and particularly Nigeria, are just coming up in this respect.

(Ayodeji Peter Ifegbesan,Biodun Ogunyem, and Isaac T. Rampedi;2017.)

The researcher's purpose of this study is to determine the effects of using trash

bags in Mabinay National High School. This aims to verify whether there's a change

(decrease or increase) which regards to the amount of garbage in MNHS.

SCOPE
This study's focus on how using trash bags affects the environment when
the of students from selected section each grade level in junior at MNHS will engage in
this case study as respondents since it focuses on how utilizing trash bags impacts the
environment.

Theoretical Background

THEORY OF WASTE MANAGEMENT BY Pongrácz et al. (2004)

Eva Pongrácz is one of the developers of Waste Management Theory. She is a

professor of energy systems and environmental engineering at the University of Oulu,

Finland. Her main research expertise is in smart and sustainable energy systems and

resource management, especially in a Nordic context. The Theory of Waste

Management represents a more in-depth account of the domain and contains

conceptual analyses of waste, the activity upon waste, and a holistic view of the goals of

waste management. Waste Management Theory is founded on the expectation that

waste management is to prevent waste causing harm to human health and the

environment.

The European Council Directive on Waste defines waste management as

collection, transport, recovery, and disposal of waste, including the supervision of such

operations and after-care of disposal sites. Waste management is control of waste

related activities, with the aim of resources conservation and protection of human health

and the environment. (Pongrácz, E. et al. (2004). Evolving the theory of waste

management-implications to waste minimization.)

The Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000

aims to protect the environment and the people in the community while setting proper

guidelines for segregation to minimize the waste when composting, recycling, and etc.

Many people may not be aware of this but there are many benefits to solid waste

management to our health and for our environment. One of the many benefits of proper

solid waste management is that it improves the overall air and water quality in the

country, which essentially keeps us healthy due to the presence of less harmful particles

in the air we breathe and the water we drink. Another benefit is that it ensures the safe

disposal of any residual or wet waste by properly segregating the wastes. Direct

handling of solid wastes could result in many types of infectious diseases to the

collectors if the waste is not properly secured. Exposure to this hazardous waste can

affect one's health and could cause long-term diseases. Proper solid waste

management also protects citizens from biohazards and physical harm, nurtures

community health, promotes sanitation, and provides opportunities to earn from

recycling. This is where the local government unit and barangay will come in to help

educate residents on how to properly separate the waste according to the right

containers and areas to ensure the wellbeing of the other residents and the people in

this line of work. (Legarda, L.,2000)

DepEd ORDER No. 5, s. 2014 or Implementing Guidelines on the Integration of

Gulayan sa Paaralan, Solid Waste Management and Tree Planting Under the National

Greening Program (NGP)

Every school shall practice waste management principles, such as minimization,

specifically resource conservation and recovery, segregation at source, reduction,

recycling, re-use, and composting, in order to promote environmental awareness and

action among the students.

Extended Producer Responsibility

A practice and a policy approach in which producers take responsibility for

management of the disposal of products they produce once those products are

designated as no longer useful by consumers. Responsibility for disposal may

Ecological Modernization Theory by Arthur P.J. Mol, Gert Spaargaren, and David A.

Sonnenfeld. Ecological modernization is a school of thought that argues that both the

state and the market can work together to protect the environment. It has gained

increasing attention among scholars and policymakers in the last several decades

internationally. (Mol P.J. A., Spaargaren G., and Sonnenfeld A. D.,1980s)

Zero Waste Theory by Paul Palmer

Zero-waste refers to principles of minimizing waste production as much as

possible. Béa Johnson of Zero Waste Home calls the framework for zero-waste the 5

Rs: refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, and rot. The idea of zero-waste is to produce as little

waste as possible, to begin with. Then, with any waste that is generated, compost,

reuse, or recycle whatever is left. be fiscal, physical, or a combination of the two.

the qualitative research is to establish whether the surrounding community and

university environment have improved.

Flow of the Study

The Input-Process-Output (IPO) model is used to demonstrate the Flow of Study.

Figure 2 depicts the model. The problem statement is included in the Input. The

environmental effectiveness of employing trash bags has considered the following

factors: garbage volume and impact to our environment.

The Process begins with the receipt of authorization for data collection via

transmittal letters. Data will be gathered, tabulated, processed, analyzed, and

interpreted. The Frequency of Correct Responses will be applied to these data.

The findings of these studies contribute to the problem of rubbish on the MNHS

campus. This is intended to assist more than just the Mabinay National High School

students and teachers, as well as those who live nearby.

Respondents

The participants of this study are the select section of each grade level in junior

high studying at Mabinay National High School Year 2022-2023. In determining the

sample size, simple random sampling is employed using the Slovin‘s formula (n = N /

(1+Ne2), where n is the sample size, N is the population size and e is the margin of

error set at 0.05 for this study. Through this technique, subset of participants is

randomly selected from the population.

Instrument

A questionnaire will be utilized to obtain the information needed for the study to

ensure accurate data collection. The questionnaire will consist of ten Yes or No

questions, two-sentence questions with three multiple-choice answers on utilizing trash

bags, a learner profile variable, and a rating about the amount of garbage they will

produce if they use trash bags.

Data Gathering Procedures

In getting the data, the study seeks approval for the School Principal of Mabinay

National High School by writing letter-request of permission. After finalizing the

questionnaire, it will be given to the identified respondents. Afterwards, the

questionnaire will be distributed personally to the respondents in coordination with their

advisor. The aim of the study will be explained to the respondents, who are identified

through simple random sampling. The explanation is clearly given and clarifications are

answered.

After answering the instrument, the data will be retrieved personally. All

information gathered will be used only for research purpose and will be handled with
utmost confidentiality. The retrieved data is used for tabulation and computation for

analysis to come up with interpretations and suggestions relative to the results.

Treatment of Data

The researchers will gather, compile, add up, and afterwards summarize the

data. To confirm the validity of the findings, the data that will be collected from the

questionnaire will undergo statistical analysis.

Learner profile factors will be examined for the first study issue using

percentages and frequency counts. To handle the data pertaining to the students who

utilized garbage bags for the second study problem, the mean score will be employed.

By doing this, we will be able to determine the significance of the connection between

students and the use of garbage bags.

Scoring Procedures

To assess the respondents' response about the usage of trash bags in the

classroom, the Mean Score and its descriptive equivalent are adapted and modified

from Vagias (2006) on his Likert-type Scale Response Anchors.
