THE MASSACHUSETTS SALVATION ARMYS 2004 VICTORY REPORT

The Salvation Army delivered more than 3 million acts of compassion in Massachusetts in 2004.

When someone is touched by the spirit of The Salvation Army, an extraordinary thing happens. It stays with them. It forms a bond stronger than stone one that cannot be broken. It becomes a ray of hope, guiding them throughout life. No matter how far the journey, or how dicult the road,The Salvation Army will be there.Thats part of our devotion to those we serve, and our simple promise that no one has to walk alone.

JUSTLIKEFAITH,WEARENOTFLEETING.
How do you measure success? The amount of a paycheck? The length of your job title? The size of your house? At The Salvation Army, we measure success not in dollars or career status, but in the effectiveness of our work. Watching a young girl take hold of her life. Helping a family make it on their own. Showing someone that their dreams can come true, no matter what the obstacles. We know weve done our jobs when in the end, these individuals turn around and pass their positive influence, their life story, their plan for success on to others. For many of the children, adults, families and communities that we serve, we are more than a red kettle or a thrift store. We are learning centers that set the foundation for success. After-school programs that help guide children on the right path. Rehabilitation programs that nurture in times of need. Were there to encourage, to inspire, to build faith. Or simply to lend a gentle hand. And the best part about The Salvation Army once you come in contact with us, your life will truly be changed forever. Throughout the following pages, youll see this sentiment come to life.Weve used our famous shield long a symbol of hope, faith, and compassion to show that its influence stays with people throughout their entire lives. Without your generous and faithful support, none of this would be possible.Thats why we extend our deepest appreciation to you. Committed to changing lives,

Lt. Colonels Fred and Barbara Van Brunt Massachusetts State Commanders

BRIDGING THE GAP Along our journey through life, we may encounter obstacles and challenges that lead us down the wrong path. Luckily, for those of us at The Salvation Army, its not a matter of how far one strays from that path, but how we can successfully guide them back towards the right one. Our Bridging the Gap program allows us to do just that by giving first-time juvenile offenders the opportunity to wipe their records clean by completing our three-month course. This course teaches at-risk youth the life skills needed to succeed in todays ever-changing world and provides a network of positive influence long after the course is completed. While program director Kellie Kelleher recognizes that the program can be difficult, the end result is quite empowering. When they graduate from the program, they should have a better understanding of themselves and how their decisions can affect those around them. Weekly lessons blend spiritual and community elements, and focus on a particular topic such as goals, education and building healthy relationships.Teens are shown how God and the Bible can have a place in their daily lives, as well as the importance of having a caring and supportive network. The best part is that the Bridging the Gap program doesnt just help these teens overcome todays obstacles, but that it prepares them for the road ahead. With lifelong encouragement, support, and even inspiration, their journey can be a success no matter where it takes them.

You hear about how young kids are when they start going down the wrong path, and that could have easily been my two boys. Fortunately, we found the Bridging the Gap program, and it really changed their lives I noticed a change in Sonny first. He had a really negative attitude towards things after his father died. One day I noticed that he seemed very happy, and was even smiling again. It wasnt long before I saw the change in DJ, too. It made me so happy to see them changing, and I knew it was for the right reasons.
Carmen, whose sons DJ and Sonny participated in the Bridging the Gap program

CAMP WONDERLAND Owned and operated by The Salvation Army since 1926 God can have a positive impact on their lives, all while building Much like the sun, an act of kindness can radiate warmth to all it touches. When something positive happens in our lives, strong friendships with other campers and their counselors. our first reaction is to share it with others. We want them to I remember one of my counselors, Pete, was always there experience the same feelings of excitement and passion that for me, whether I needed someone to talk to, pray with, or we feel. As these feelings are spread from person to person, just hang out with, says Jonathan, who attended the camp others are inspired to create their own kindness and pass it for four years. It really meant a lot to me that he cared so on. Eventually, the light becomes too bright to ignore. much about me and the other kids. Its with this spirit that Camp Wonderland was created. More Positive role models like these set an example and inspire than a summer camp, it introduces children to the wonders of nature, the power of faith, and the strength of friendships. many to return the favor. Many campersincluding Jonathanbecome counselors. My life has really been influenced by coming to Camp Wonderland. I just hope that Located on 110 acres in Sharon, MA, on Lake Massapoag, Ill have the same kind of impact on other children that my Camp Wonderland is an overnight camp for children ages counselors had on me. 6 to 12. During week-long sessions, campers take part in hikes, enjoy arts and crafts, swim in the lake, and learn how

I really feel good about sending my kids to Camp Wonderland. I know that the staff is well trained and that my kids are safe. They really amaze me at how much theyve learned when they come home, too. Its not just a place where they can have fun but a place where the staff has an impact on the lives of these children. My kids have really been influenced by their counselors and learned from them.
Debbie, whose son and daughter attended Camp Wonderland

EVENTHESMALLEST

I was hesitant to bring Paul here. I thought that low-cost day care would translate into low quality day care, but it doesnt. Knowing that my children are being taught by caring and respected teachers means so much to me and to their future.
Nicole, whose son attends the Childrens Learning Center

GLIMMEROFHOPE TRAVELSFAR
THE CHILDRENS LEARNING CENTER It's not the size of the work, but the power behind it.There's no better example of this than The Salvation Army's Children's Learning Center in Dorchester. Providing low-cost day care for more than 60 pre-school aged children, the Center allows us to touch the lives of some of the youngest members of our community. But at the Center, low-cost does not mean low quality. Each of the three classrooms is staffed with a licensed instructor who teaches lessons that encourage both academic and spiritual learning. Unfortunately, many of the children that come here have a history of learning difficulties or abuse in the family, so we work with them and try to get them the help they need, says Jeffrey Bailey, director of the Center. At the Children's Learning Center, the kids always come first. And it's not just the kids who benefit from the Center. Most of the families live within a five-minute radius of the Center, which allows the parentsmany of whom are single mothers to pursue career or educational endeavors of their own. Thanks to recent renovations, the 40-year-old facility received a much-needed face lift. Classrooms were completely renovated and updated, the library expanded, new energy efficient windows were installed, and the building received handicap accessible ramps and an elevator. These improvements have allowed the Center to carry on its message of education and personal growth for the children and families of Dorchester. Laurelia, whose son attended the Childrens Learning Center for two years, has seen the impact such a place can have firsthand. The Center helped teach him that learning is fun, while developing his social skills with other children. They really gave him a strong foundation to build on, and its showing now that hes older.

WORCESTER CORPS SALLYS PLACE There are certain times when we all take the little things for granted: having a home, the support of loved ones, even nourishment. Unfortunately, many go without these essential elements. At The Salvation Army, our goal is to help satisfy some of these needs, and prove that with the right encouragement, anything is possible. And sometimes, that starts with something as simple as a good meal. The Worcester Corps Sallys Place is a feeding program that provides breakfast and lunch, one of the few programs in the area to offer both meals. While the majority of those who stop by are homeless, they also serve several elderly and disabled people. In all, nearly 50,000 meals are served each year. The goal is to provide a nutritionally balanced meal each day, which often consists of muffins, cereal, and juice in the morning, and soup, sandwiches or chicken in the afternoon. Without us serving these people, many of them would go through the day without eating a single meal, says Captain Steven Lopes, Commanding Officer at the Worcester Salvation Army. Along with Sallys Place, the Worcester Corps helps feed an additional 600 people each month thanks to a well-stocked food pantry. We have a variety of perishable and non-perishable items that are distributed daily, says Captain Lopes. For many families, without the extra help from The Salvation Army, they would not be able to make it on their own. According to Captain Lopes, The Worcester Corps isnt just about one program serving one need in the community.Whether you come to us to have lunch or are in need of groceries to get by, we want people to know that we are here to serve.

Im a single mom with two young children. Just knowing that I can count on The Salvation Army each month for help allows me to provide other necessities for my kids. I couldnt get by without their help.
Carla, who has utilized the Worcester Corps food pantry for 10 years

Im very thankful that The Salvation Army offers this program for my mom. I think it has really helped keep her involved and connected to the people around her. Its a wonderful thing to see and hear about all of the things they do here. Its really helped her enjoy this stage of her life, and were all happy to enjoy it with her.
Brenda, whose mother Fernanda participates in the Plymouth Corps senior program

PLYMOUTH CORPS SENIOR PROGRAM The sign of a true friend is that no matter how far or winding the road becomes, they'll follow you to the end. This is also true for The Salvation Army. While we focus on creating solid foundations for children and young adults, we have not forgotten about those who've traveled the road ahead of us. Through our various Senior Programs across the Commonwealth,The Salvation Army can give something back to our seniors in the community and show them that age has nothing to do with living life to the fullest.

each other. Without this program, many of them would have very little contact with other people their own age. It gives them something to get involved in and have fun with. For many of the seniors who participate in these programs, The Salvation Army provides a welcome connection to others like themselves. And for some, it provides the right inspiration to travel a little bit farther down the road of life. I feel very blessed to be living such a long life, says 89-year old Fernanda. Coming to this program really keeps me going. I enjoy seeing everyone and making new friendships with the people here.

WHERETHEROADLEADS,

Programs often involve arts and crafts, games, even field trips. Captain Dan Brunelle of the Plymouth Salvation Army says that he is always fascinated by the life stories of the seniors and how much they share with
