BRIDGING THE GAP Along our journey through life, we may encounter obstacles and challenges that lead us down the wrong path. Luckily, for those of us at The Salvation Army, its not a matter of how far one strays from that path, but how we can successfully guide them back towards the right one. Our Bridging the Gap program allows us to do just that by giving first-time juvenile offenders the opportunity to wipe their records clean by completing our three-month course. This course teaches at-risk youth the life skills needed to succeed in todays ever-changing world and provides a network of positive influence long after the course is completed. While program director Kellie Kelleher recognizes that the program can be difficult, the end result is quite empowering. When they graduate from the program, they should have a better understanding of themselves and how their decisions can affect those around them. Weekly lessons blend spiritual and community elements, and focus on a particular topic such as goals, education and building healthy relationships.Teens are shown how God and the Bible can have a place in their daily lives, as well as the importance of having a caring and supportive network. The best part is that the Bridging the Gap program doesnt just help these teens overcome todays obstacles, but that it prepares them for the road ahead.With lifelong encouragement, support, and even inspiration, their journey can be a success no matter where it takes them.

You hear about how young kids are when they start going down the wrong path, and that could have easily been my two boys. Fortunately, we found the Bridging the Gap program, and it really changed their lives I noticed a change in Sonny first. He had a really negative attitude towards things after his father died. One day I noticed that he seemed very happy, and was even smiling again. It wasnt long before I saw the change in DJ, too. It made me so happy to see them changing, and I knew it was for the right reasons.

THE CHILDRENS LEARNING CENTER It's not the size of the work, but the power behind it.There's no better example of this than The Salvation Army's Children's Learning Center in Dorchester. Providing low-cost day care for more than 60 pre-school aged children, the Center allows us to touch the lives of some of the youngest members of our community. But at the Center, low-cost does not mean low quality. Each of the three classrooms is staffed with a licensed instructor who teaches lessons that encourage both academic and spiritual learning. Unfortunately, many of the children that come here have a history of learning difficulties or abuse in the family, so we work with them and try to get them the help they need, says Jeffrey Bailey, director of the Center. At the Children's Learning Center, the kids always come first. And it's not just the kids who benefit from the Center. Most of the families live within a five-minute radius of the Center, which allows the parentsmany of whom are single mothers to pursue career or educational endeavors of their own. Thanks to recent renovations, the 40-year-old facility received a much-needed face lift. Classrooms were completely renovated and updated, the library expanded, new energy efficient windows were installed, and the building received handicap accessible ramps and an elevator. These improvements have allowed the Center to carry on its message of education and personal growth for the children and families of Dorchester. Laurelia, whose son attended the Childrens Learning Center for two years, has seen the impact such a place can have firsthand. The Center helped teach him that learning is fun, while developing his social skills with other children.They really gave him a strong foundation to build on, and its showing now that hes older.

WORCESTER CORPS SALLYS PLACE There are certain times when we all take the little things for granted: having a home, the support of loved ones, even nourishment. Unfortunately, many go without these essential elements. At The Salvation Army, our goal is to help satisfy some of these needs, and prove that with the right encouragement, anything is possible. And sometimes, that starts with something as simple as a good meal. The Worcester Corps Sallys Place is a feeding program that provides breakfast and lunch, one of the few programs in the area to offer both meals.While the majority of those who stop by are homeless, they also serve several elderly and disabled people. In all, nearly 50,000 meals are served each year. The goal is to provide a nutritionally balanced meal each day, which often consists of muffins, cereal, and juice in the morning, and soup, sandwiches or chicken in the afternoon. Without us serving these people, many of them would go through the day without eating a single meal, says Captain Steven Lopes, Commanding Officer at the Worcester Salvation Army. Along with Sallys Place, the Worcester Corps helps feed an additional 600 people each month thanks to a well-stocked food pantry. We have a variety of perishable and non-perishable items that are distributed daily, says Captain Lopes. For many families, without the extra help from The Salvation Army, they would not be able to make it on their own. According to Captain Lopes, The Worcester Corps isnt just about one program serving one need in the community.Whether you come to us to have lunch or are in need of groceries to get by, we want people to know that we are here to serve.

PLYMOUTH CORPS SENIOR PROGRAM The sign of a true friend is that no matter how far or winding the road becomes, they'll follow you to the end.This is also true for The Salvation Army.While we focus on creating solid foundations for children and young adults, we have not forgotten about those who've traveled the road ahead of us. Through our various Senior Programs across the Commonwealth,The Salvation Army can give something back to our seniors in the community and show them that age has nothing to do with living life to the fullest.

For many of the seniors who participate in these programs, The Salvation Army provides a welcome connection to others like themselves. And for some, it provides the right inspiration to travel a little bit farther down the road of life. I feel very blessed to be living such a long life, says 89-year old Fernanda. Coming to this program really keeps me going. I enjoy seeing everyone and making new friendships with the people here.
