Academic Year 2023/2024 Semester 2

Tutorial/Lab 6 (20 March 2024)

Instructions:
The objectives of Tutorial/Lab 6 are:
(i) Objective 1: Learn how to calculate F measure.
(ii) Objective 2: Learn how to calculate clustering coefficient.
(iii) Objective 3: Learn how to calculate neighborhood overlap.

Q1. As many lovers are getting married on the once-in-a-lifetime date 22022022 (22 Feb 2022),
due to its uniqueness of being a palindrome, the Singapore Registry of Marriages decide to set
up lightings with bulbs and wirings to celebrate the occasion too. Please compute the F measure
of the network.

Q2. Mr Jovial is celebrating Christmas and has bought some beautiful lights, tinsel, trinkets,
baubles, and ornaments. While decorating the tree, he is amused that he can arrange them to
look like a “holiday network”. Please compute the F measure of the “holiday network”.

1
Q3. Mr Rich’s kid continues to show his talent by drawing some landmarks that he recalls
during their recent family travel, namely that of Singapore, France and Greece. What is the F
measure of the network?

Q4. Mr Nostalgic draws a well-known landmark from the past. What is the F measure of the
network?

Q5. In the East Coast of Singapore, there are 8 residences (i.e., Kim, Lee, Mak, Ng, Ong, Png,
Quek, and Ruan). The residences (nodes) are connected by roads (links) as follows.

Which of the following is/are false?

(i) The clustering coefficient of the Kim residence is the same as that of the Lee residence.
(ii) The clustering coefficient of the Ong residence is the same as that of the Png residence.
(iii) The clustering coefficient of the Quek residence is 0.5.

2
Q6. 19 families (nodes A to S) are staying at the Central Park Residence. Their interactions are
depicted as follows.

Which of the following is/are true?

(i) The clustering coefficient of node B family is the same as node D family
(ii) The clustering coefficient of node C family is the same as node K family
(iii) The clustering coefficient of node N family is the same as node S family

Q7. 17 families are connected as follows in the Riverdale Residence.

Which of the following is/are true?

(i) The clustering coefficient of A residence is the same as C residence
(ii) The clustering coefficient of H residence is the same as J residence
(iii) The clustering coefficient of I residence is the same as O residence

3
Q8. Xyon (node X) and Yves (node Y) have travelled with different tour groups to France,
Germany, and Italy. Their bond with the rest of the tourists in each country is depicted as
follows. Please calculate the measure of neighborhood overlap for X-Y in France, Germany,
and Italy.

Q9. Mr Energetic loves cycling. The following depicts the cycling club he is in. Over time,
many of them love to go cycling in pairs, e.g., L-M, L-R, and M-Q. Please calculate the measure
of neighborhood overlap for L-M, L-R, and M-Q.

4
Q10. 3 pairs of partners (A-B, M-N, and Y-Z) have been canoeing together for quite some time.
Recently, due to different personal reasons, they may want to abandon this activity. Their sense
of sorrow is to some extent determined by how embedded they are within the canoeist network.
Please calculate the measure of neighborhood overlap for A-B, M-N, and Y-Z.

5
Q11. Mr Clarity further explains to the ministers how he places the landed properties to
encourage bonding. In particular, he distinguishes the critical conceptual difference between
clustering coefficient versus measure of neighborhood overlap. Please illustrate in the Figures
below the differences by adding edges to the 6 or 8 nodes (to create one component) such that
they satisfy the characteristics indicated.
