Q1) The following reaction is carried out in a constant-volume batch reactor:

AB -rA = kCA and k = 0.046 min-1
Calculate the time required to achieve 90% conversion of A.

Q2) The gas-phase reaction A + B  C is carried out isothermally in a 20 dm3 constant-volume batch reactor.
20 moles of pure A is initially placed in the reactor. The reactor is well mixed.
a) If the reaction is first order: -rA = kCA; k = 0.865 min-1, calculate the time required to reduce the number
of moles of A in the reactor to 0.2 mol.
b) If the reaction is second order: -rA = kC2A; k = 2 dm3/mol.min, calculate the time required to consume 19
moles of A.

Q3) The gas-phase reaction A + B  C is carried out isothermally in a 1.8 dm3 constant-volume batch reactor.
25 moles of pure A is initially placed in the reactor. The reactor is well mixed.
a) If the reaction is zero order: -rA = k with k = 0.005 mol/dm3.s, calculate the reaction time (in min.)
required to reduce the number of moles of A in the reactor to 12.5 mol.
b) If the reaction is first order: -rA = kCA; k = 0.95 min-1, calculate the reaction time required to reduce the
number of moles of A in the reactor to 0.25 mol.
c) If the reaction is second order: -rA = kC2A; k = 2 dm3/mol.min, calculate the reaction time necessary to
consume 20 moles of A.

Q4) The irreversible liquid phase second order reaction is carried out in a CSTR.

The entering concentration of A, CA0 is 2 mol/dm3 and the exit concentration of

A CA is 0.1 mol/dm3. The entering and exiting volumetric flow rate, v0 is
constant at 3 dm3/s. What is the corresponding reactor volume?

Q5) The reaction A  B is to be carried out isothermally in a continuous-flow reactor. Calculate both the CSTR
and the PFR volumes necessary to consume 99% of A when the entering flow rate is 5 mol/h and the entering
volumetric flow rate is 10 dm3/h, assuming the reaction rate (-rA):
(a) -rA = k with k = 0.05 mol/dm3.h
b) -rA = kCA; k = 0.0001 s-1
c) -rA = kC2A; k = 3 dm3/mol.h

Q6) A first order irreversible reaction A  B with k = 0.01 s-1is required to reach 30% conversion (assume
constant volume).
a) How long will it take in a batch reactor?
b) What CSTR reactor volume and residence time would be required given a volumetric flow rate of 10-3
m3s-1.
c) What PFR reactor volume and residence time would be required given a volumetric flow rate of 10-3
m3s-1.

fermentation at this enzyme concentration are given by

Find the size of mixed flow reactor needed for 95% conversion of reactant in a feed stream (25 liter/min) of
reactant (2 mol/liter) and enzyme.

Q8) A gaseous feed of pure A (1 mol/liter) enters a mixed flow reactor (2 liters) and reacts as follows:

Find what feed rate (liter/min) will give an outlet concentration CA = 0.5 mol/liter.

Q9) A gaseous feed of pure A (2 mol/liter) enters a mixed flow reactor (4 liters) and reacts as follows:
2A  R, -rA=0.005 CA2
Find what feed rate (liter/min) will give an outlet concentration of CA= 1 mol/liter.

Q10) What size of mixed flow reactor is needed for 75% conversion of feed stream of FA0=1000 mol/hr when
CA0=1.2 mol/liter? This is a liquid reaction as given below:
AR Assume –rA = 0.5 mol/liter.min.

Q11) The elementary liquid phase reaction 2A  B is carried out isothermally in a CSTR. Pure A enters the
CSTR at a volumetric flow rate of 25 dm3/s and at a concentration of 0.2 mol/dm3. What will be the required
volume of CSTR to achieve 90% conversion when k = 10 dm3/mol.s?
