Bryan JStop Following Follow Bryan J Bryan J Smith Self-study with a simulator or real, physical Cisco equipment. You really want to learn the networking basics, and Cisco's IOS, than just studying for an exam. The CCNA is simple enough that you have this flexibility. Just take your time, learn everything you should know, and play with a simulator. Of all of my past studies, the CCNA was the most fun, because I just learned every little detail of IOS I never knew before (the networking basics were already there). And it lead me to the CCDP (I ended up not taking the Troubleshooting exam, so I didn't finish the CCNP as well). 6 days ago
ClementStop Following Follow Clement Clement Knll @Bryan Why not the TSHOOT? With some experience, it's one of the easiest, and surely the most fun, exams Cisco offers. @Chiranjeev Personally, being an ex-instructor myself, I am no big fan of instructor led training generally it's a huge waste of time and money if you already have some knowledge about the subject. If not... well, there are some low-cost instructor web training sessions available, the question is only which ones are the good ones. Try to get hold of a copy of Packet Tracer, and do the exercises which come with it. There are also a few older and current lab companions and guides available, which may help to expand the scope of the exercises covered by the Packet Tracer. Otherwise, the official certification guides from Cisco Press are very good. Also useful (IMHO) is the Cisco Press CCNA Command Reference and their Quick Reference Sheets, the available Flash Cards (depending on your learning style), and the Boson Exam Simulator. And I always love the ancient Douglas Comer: "Internetworking With Tcp/Ip: Principles, Protocols, and Architectures" - I think they are at the 5th or 6th edition since 1988... A lot off people recommend Lammle, but I found the "CCNA FastPass" from this author one of the worst - and worst edited - books on the subject, so I stay away from him. In the end it's always the same - if you already have previous experience/knowledge, the CCNA isn't that difficult, no matter which road you choose to fill the gaps. If not, and you start from scratch, it's probably pretty tough no matter what. 5 days ago
Bryan J Smith Clement -- I was literally burnt out at that point. I just took my 10th exam (or so) within a couple of weeks, and had to drive almost 100 miles (200 miles round trip) to take most of them. Just finally got to me. I didn't take another exam for 2 years. ;) 5 days ago
DanStop Following Follow Dan Dan Sobel I would have loved to take a term off, and study with an instructor, however, my employer at the time wasn't going to pay for any of this. Fortunately, it wasn't necessary. My method was Skillsoff Online Training (which was free from work, I would NOT recommend PAYING for it, it's NOT worth what they want), along with Odom and Lammle books, and PacketTracer for hands on. Odom is very complete and well written, and boring as all get out. Lammle is not as well written HOWEVER, he does get the points across in a VERY effective and entertaining style. I would recommend both (I read both before the test). Looking back, I would probably recommend Lammle's book as a primary. I went the "2 Test Method", and did NOT use a Simulator prior to the first test. That was a MISTAKE. Fortunately, there is "HELP" on the simulator, so I was able to get though it, however, I highly recommend NOT doing that. Get a copy of PacketTracer and learn the labs. The CCNA Test questions are based on VERY SIMPLE Network setups, and the test LOOKS a lot like PacketTracer. Dan 23 hours ago
Dustin Dortch Todd Lammle's book published by Sybex is by far the best book out there for the CCNA. From pure study, if you dedicate the time you should easily be able to pass the CCENT. The key for the second exam, or the the single exam option, is to become familiar with the IOS, on top of studying the book. The Cisco Press book by Odom is also a good read for this exam.
Eileen Vandenburgh Hi Chiranjeevi, Also, along with the course material, it is much easier to practice with a simulated lab online or on your desktop - MIMIC Virtual Lab CCNA. http://www.rentciscolab.com . You get access to Cisco routers and switches to try configurations without worrying about messing something up. Best of luck, Eileen
Pramod Gangoor Hi Chiranjeevi, I would recommend buy some CCNA and CCENT related books, this would cover theory and for practice use can either go for - Cisco Packet tracker (need to buy) - GNS 3/Dynamips (this is not a simulation, it emulates the real IOS) ..GNS3 is free but you only need to get Cisco IOS. - Become member in forums like Cisco netpro and etc., that way you could learn more

Scott MorrisStop Following Follow Scott Morris Scott Morris -CCIEx4 #4713, JNCIE #153, CCDE #2009::D Keep in mind that Packet Tracer is only licensed to Cisco's NetAcademy folks... So while you may be able to obtain it otherwise, I wouldn't go flaunting that in public forums! Instructor-led classes have to do with two things. First, the quality of the instructor. If it's someone who can barely read the powerpoint slides, then yes, it's going to suck. Second, the amount of effort you put into it. I'm a big fan of knowing something before attending any seminar/class. That way you have
some baseline and can ask better questions and gain a lot more value out of the class (within the confines of point number 1). Whether it's CCNA level or CCIE level, the concept is the same! But play with equipment/simulators as much as possible. You'll learn things that are incorrect in almost every book out there. But being able to see that is an important step! Finding forums where people help is great as well. I'd recommend the Cisco Learning Network (http://learningnetwork.cisco.com) Good luck!
Consider i am already preparing for CCNA and i want to work on another certification in parallel. What would be the best choice if i had 6 months to get both the certifications.Help me on This guys..

HectorStop Following Follow Hector Hector Hinojosa, CCNP I agree with Felix if you are going to be in a data center environment. Virtualization/VMware is where data centers are going. RedHat/Linux will expose you to free tools like Nagios that are Linux based and used for monitoring networking equipment and servers. Very stable OS.

FelixStop Following Follow Felix Felix Solis Edward, it is all about diversity. IT Directors or Chief Technical Officers are not looking for silo experts, they are looking for jack of all trades. They want you to be their Cisco Network Engineer, and be equally diverse to handle all their other needs. They want
you to be versatile to handle their Linux based infrastructure, Vitualization, Storage Area Networks, and VOIP needs. Depending on the type of organizational responsibility you find your self, they will not have the budger to hire multiple IT techs. They are looking for one person to carry all that weight. Infrastructure Networking is no longer about routing, you have to be the Microsoft Server guru and the Linux guru as well. No more room for primadonna in this economy.

JohnStop Following Follow John John Bailey, PMP Consider all certifications as an investment. As your time and presumably money are limited, you need a more precise goal than you have stated. I recommend "What Color Is Your Parachute" and "Don't Send A Resume" to help you focus and determine what you should be doing. You should not be gathering certifications randomly--a Gartner Group consultant once told me, "Making changes without metrics is called tampering."-- nor based on the advice of anyone who gets paid to deliver them--as they are less apt to have your best interests in mind. If you want a job, what job? Do your research, gather the list of requirements for that role, and master those. Don't show up with 40 certs and no experience, either, as that looks like fraud to some. Don't assume. And make your career your own.

Bryan J Smith If you're going to touch Linux systems, Red Hat certifications are often highly regarded because 100% of their certification exams are hands-on, performance-based testing. I.e., As I understand it, despite the investment and program costs, Red Hat decided early on to model their entire program (not just higher levels, but all levels) based on one of the most reputable in the industry, the Cisco CCIE. For all Red Hat examinations, you complete objectives on actual systems in front of you, in a lab environment. Not remote connections, not simulations, actual, real systems. SIDE NOTE: Understanding Linux boot issues and internals is also very helpful if you get into advanced ESX/ESXi host troubleshooting, as VMware utilizes a Linux helper OS. I've had to deal with a number of them myself over the years. P.S. I didn't know Cisco had any "Certified Engineer" title. I only know of the Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) and the Voice, Wireless, etc... CCNA specializations, as well as the higher Professional and Expert tracks.

Uchechukwu Onyekwuluje @Yusuf hit the nail in the head. Make sure it is what you want to do and not because it is the trend. Both CISCO and REDHAT have concentrations in security. If you already manage an infrastructure comprinsing of REDHAT systems and CISCO gear, take it as far as you can. Start with Security+ to get a good feel for the basics and then take it as far as you can.

JeremyStop Following Follow Jeremy Jeremy Needle Ravi, You need to differentiate between a career as a Security Analyst and/or Manager, vs a Security Engineer. Typically CISSP is what an analyst or manager will pursuit, gaining a birds eye view of security technologies and industry best practices. For a security engineer, they're more into the design & implementation of specific security technologies. In additon to the security concentrations for Cisco and Red Hat, I would recommend you take a look and the sans.org website and examine the training they have there.

Compliance auditing? CISA Security Officer/Security Manager? CISM, SSCP/CISSP I don't belive Security+ hold much value compared to any of these.

http://darbyslogs.blogspot.com/2011/03/orlando-study-group-logs.html
DarbyStop Following Follow Darby Darby Weaver Hi guys! I've started a study group in Orlando for aspiring CCNAs at the moment and hopefully will take each group to the CCNP and beyond for those willing.
So what does a study group do? 1. Discuss exam objectives. 2. Have courageous conversations over career and job tasks. 3. Network with other members. 4. Lots of hands-on. Sweat and make it work or else kind of hands on. Example: The group is at the CCENT level so tonight was a hands-on evening: 1. Password Recovery - Just do it. Real routers and real serial cables. Kinda feels like the scene in Swordfish - 1 minute or less. 2. Get the router up and running: Media Type, IP Addressing, and Subnet Mask. 3. Can you ping? 4. TFTP-Server using the router as a TFTP server. 5. Compare show version commands. 6. Best IOS becomes the server, other routers are the clients. Copy to flash... erase first. Can you feel the tension? Remember, the team is at the CCENT level and have not passed the exam yet. All members have access to an Access/Terminal Server, a Frame Switch, at least 2 2950 Switches, and 6 Routers (2600 and 2600XMs).
This is just one night. Awesome experiences all the way around. At least 3 are Cisco Academy students/graduates; 2 are former CCNAs, 2 have failed the CCNA exam recently, one is a former CCAI, and one is a current CCNA and is working towards his CCNP. I have 2 that are starting out totally fresh. All and all it is a good group and things are working out really well. I'd recommend others gather such a group and see what you can learn from each other. It's a great opportunity to expand your knowledge and your human network as well. Pretty kewl. Darby Weaver
Um... little extras - I invited members to bring any questions with them to the meeting: 1. How to troubleshoot EIGRP Flapping Routes? sh ip eigrp event debug ip routing check eigrp neigbor status, timers, and maybe even mtu for example - don't rule out the little things like bandwith restrictions of eigrp updates, and speed/duplex mismatches - look for the obscenely ridiculous things that people overlook or fat finger. 2. How to troubleshoot/determine the Root Bridge in Spanning-Tree? show spanning-tree and then look for the root port and follow it till you get to the root of the spanning-tree. Seems simple enough. Sometimes you are at the root and sometimes you are anywhere but the root. So how to change this? Well the next step is to determine what switch should be the root and determine why the current root actually got selected in the first place. Notify your peers and then plan for the change. When approved - spanning-tree vlan xxx root primary or whatever value you think you need to seal the deal. Expect a momentary disruption while the spanning-tree converges and then life is back to normal.

GerriStop Following Follow Gerri Gerri Parsley Sooo, is this a solicitation for members or just a suggestion for creating study groups?

DarbyStop Following Follow Darby Darby Weaver I like to think of it as a subtle suggestion. People want to get certified. Most people study alone or in informal groups. In Orlando, I started a Network User Group to meet part of my goals. Then I started a Study Group that splintered from the larger User Group. People are working and collaborating. I take on any questions presented by the group real-time and resolve them real time or on the fly if I happen to know the answer for the study group. I also explain every concept or verify that I do when each concept is covered by the study group. I find it a very good method for all involved to learn not only technology but how to be more open through collaboration with one's peers. I highly encourage the study group to network with other members of the study group. FREE Training and Experience like this is rare and very hard to come by in my opinion. Just an opinion.

DarbyStop Following Follow Darby Darby Weaver Chris, 1. Ebay is where I buy my gear from. I paid for the routers I gave away to my study group, I paid for the routers/switch in use during the physical session, and I also paid for the remote racks and the electricity/air required to run them in order to make them available for the group. 2. No, no member has been asked to pay anything. They have been asked to being a laptop to the session with serial interface and the blue console cable each was given at the first meeting. 3. I hold the following active Cisco certs and quite a few others: CCENT/CCNA CCDA CCNP CCDP CCSP CCVP CCNP + Voice CCNP + Wireless Almost CCIP but I need to re-take the new Route exam since my previous CCNP BCSI was pre-2007 or so. I've taken and passed all the other exams required for the CCIP. I've passed the CCIE Written for both Security and Routing and Switching. I'm a Sniffer Certified Master (1 of 66 globally and 1 of 13 certified outside of Sniffer) - this is probably not active any more since NetScout tookover and I've not renewed it yet with them. MCSE+I MCSE 2000/2003 - MCSA, Active Directory, Exchange 5.5/2000, and Security former MCT The list goes on... but let's not bog down the Internet on my certs alone... easier to list what I don't have. I am running a 1841 for my PPPoE connection to the internet and I can SSH into it from outsidebut I can't get any further so I can use the 2509 directly except telneting from the 1841. I want to do something like you are doing but I want to make it more secure so I can do it through the NET. Can you give me some advice? Thanks
15 hours ago
DarbyStop Following Follow Darby Darby Weaver Paul, You've got a lot of gear there. I'm not sure why you need the 3750 for BGP per se - all things considered. 1. You can SSH to the 1841 for your own usage. - You have that. 2. You can allow people to Telnet directly to the 2509 if you like - what are they going to have access to anyway? Your practice rack? Yep. Not bad really.
You are using your 2821's for Frame Relay? Um... kind of a very expensive Frame Relay if you ask me. Just get the 2522 and you are much better than fine. Sounds like you are using the WIC-2Ts and if so... have you considered AS5350 for example. too late you have what you have. Just seem odd to me. 3. You could create an IPSec VPN Tunnel and allow people into your network via the tunnel and then just route to the 2509 once inside if you are that worried about security - or you can always build a site-to-site VPN tunnel too. Not so bad really. 4. You could use PAT to allow people to the 2509 as another option. You got options for sure.

DarbyStop Following Follow Darby Darby Weaver Your welcome - please feel free to add some more and I'll do the same. I know I use a ton of resources from everywhere... Ok - Not a ton - I'm adding another 6TB NAS to my network... It does not weigh a ton. The SAN in the next room with about 5.6TB does weigh close to a ton if we add all the components together.

Albert Short Google for a application called GNS3, it allows you to simulate routers, if you have the required IOS versions to run on them. There some very good how to docs out there as well for getting it configured using either vocal or vm.
SeanStop Following Follow Sean Sean Stech I agree with Albert. I used the GNS3 for my CCENT (and currently for CCNA). As far as the IOS's you can go to http://www.4shared.com/dir/115493/ and type in the ios you're looking for (ie 3560 ios). You may have to do some checking to get the correct version. Hope this helps!

G from Singapore - Oct 28 2011, 1:04 PM Report Spam Urge those who haven taken their CCNA to take it asap. Passed narrowly today with a score of 841. About 78 new questions i encountered today. Thanks to this dump, it is still the one to rely on. :) For SIM questions do study ACL, VTP and EIGRP. Try to score on EIGRP (just changing EIGRP number to 221 and adding network address in and remb to type #no auto-summary and #copy running-config startup-config) and VLAN (just enter in show commands and answer mcq). It should boost up your marks significantly. ACL could be a little challenging as the others have reported slightly different stories. Study and understand this dump inside out, not only memorising the position of answers here as the exam answers are jumbled. All the best and thanks guys! :)

Aspect ip/mac addresses, interfaces etc to be changed. Read the modifications part under each sim well on 9tut, to understand what kind of modifications to aspect. If you understand the concepts behind the sims, know the show commants to find the problem and the commands to fix the problem: then you will be fine.
