Strength of materials 2A (SOM2AA2)

Tutorial 0: Stress and Strain

Problem 1
A rod 150cm long and diameter 2.0 cm is subjected to an axial pull of 20KN. If the modulus
of elasticity of the material of the rod is 2×105 N/mm²; determine:
i. The stress
ii. The strain, and
iii. The elongation of the rod
Problem 2
Find the minimum diameter of a steel wire, which is used to raise a load of 4000N if the stress
in the rod is not to exceed 95 MN/m².
[Ans. 7.32mm]

Problem 3
Find the Young’s Modulus of a brass rod of diameter 25mm and of length 250mm which is
subjected to a tensile load of 50KN when the extension of the rod is equal to 0.3mm.

Problem 4
The ultimate stress, for a hollow steel column which carries an axial load of 1.9MN is
480N/mm². If the external diameter of the column is 200mm, determine the internal diameter.
Take the factor of safety as 4.
[Ans. 140.85mm]

Problem 5
A rod 200cm long and of diameter 3.0cm is subjected to an axial load of 30N. If the Young’s
Modulus of the material of the rod is 2×105 N/mm², determine:
i. Stress
ii. Strain
iii. Elongation of the rod
[Ans. (i) 42.44 N/mm² (ii) 0.000212 (iii) 0.0424cm

Problem 6
Find the Young’s Modulus of a rod of diameter 30mm and of length 300mm which is subjected
to a tensile load of 60KN and the extension of the rod is equal to 0.4mm.
[Ans. 63.6 GN/m²]
Problem 7
The safe stress, for a hollow steel column which carries an axial load of 2.2×103 KN is 120
MN/m². If the external diameter of the column is 25cm, determine the internal diameter.
[Ans. 19.79cm]
Problem 8
An axial pull of 4000N is acting on a bar consisting of three sections of length 30cm, 25cm and
20cm and of diameters 2cm,4cm and 5cm respectively. If the Young’s Modulus
=2×105 N/mm², determine:
i. Stress in each section
ii. Total extension of the bar
[Ans. (i) 127.32,31.8, 20.37N/mm²,(ii)0.025]
