9. A car travels along a straight line for first half time with speed 40 km/h and second half
time with speed 60km/h. Find the average speed of the car. ( Answer – 50km/h)
10. A body starts rolling over a horizontal surface with an initial velocity of 0.5m/s. Due to
friction, its velocity decreases at the rate of 0.05m/s2. How much time will it take for the
body to stop? ( Answer – 10s)
11. A car travelling at 36km/h speeds up to 72km/h in 5 seconds. What is the acceleration? If
the same car stops in 20 seconds, what is the retardation?
( Answer – a = 2m/s2 and a = -1m/s2)

the bus. ( Answer – a = -0.5m/s2)
13. A train is travelling at a speed of 108km/h. How much distance is it travelling every
second? ( Answer – s = 30m/s)
14. The average speed of a person in driving to school is 30km/h. On the return trip along the
same route, the average speed is 25km/h. What is the average speed for the round trip to
the school? ( Answer – Average speed = 27.27km/h)
15. Alka jogs from one end A to the other end B of a straight 250 m road in 1 minute and 40
seconds. She then turns around and jogs 50 m back to point C in 30 seconds. Calculate
average speed and average velocity in jogging from (i) A to B and (ii) A to C
( Answer – (i) Average speed = 2.5m/s and Average velocity = 2.5 m/s (ii) Average
speed = 2.3m/s and Average velocity = 1.54 m/s)
ANSWERS TO ASSIGNMENT SHEET NO.1
Average speed = Total distance travelled/ total time taken = 30km + 30 km/ t1+t2
5. Let x1, x2 and x3 be the distance travelled by the train during the first three parts of the
journey.
Time taken for the first stretch, t1 = length of the first stretch (x1)/ speed of first
stretch(v1)
Time taken for the second stretch, t2 = length of the second stretch (x2) / speed of the
second stretch (v2), t2 = x2/v2
t2 = 90km/ v2
The train should travel at a speed of v2 = 90km/h in the second stretch so that the average
speed is 60km/h for the entire trip.
Acceleration, a = v – u / t = 10 – 0 / 10 = 1 m/s2
Time taken, t = 20 s
Acceleration, a = v – u / t = 0 - 10 / 20 = - 0. 5 m/s2
8. Let the distance ‘x’ km be travelled by the train with a speed of 30km/h
Time taken, t1 = distance travelled / speed = x / 30 km/h = x/30 h
Time taken for the return journey, t2 = distance travelled / speed = x/ 45km/h = x/45 h
Average speed = Total distance / Total time taken = x + x / t1+t2 = 2x / x/30 h + x/45 h
Acceleration, a = -0.05m/s2
Acceleration, a = v – u / t or
Time taken, t = 5s
Acceleration, a = v – u / t = 20 – 10 / 5 = 2 m/s2
Acceleration, a = v – u / t = 0 - 20 / 20 = - 1 m/s2
Time taken, t = 10 s
Time taken for the return journey, t2 = distance / speed = x / 25km/h = x/25 h
15. A---------------------------C-----------B
A to B = 250 m, B to C = 50m
Average velocity = displacement/ time taken= 200 m/ 130 s = 1.54 m/s along AC
