ANSWERS TO ASSIGNMENT SHEET NO.1

1. Distance covered = Circumference of the circle

For two revolution, distance = 2 ×circumference = 2×2Πr (Π= 22/7 = 3.14)

Radius (r) = Diameter/2; r = D/2 = 10m/2 = 5m

Therefore, distance covered = 2 ×2 ×3.14×5 = 62.8m

2. Velocity = 36km/h = 36×1000m/3600s = 10 m/s

Distance travelled = Velocity ×time = 10 m/s ×15s = 150 m

3. Time , t = 30 micro seconds = 30 × 10-6 s

Speed of signal = speed of light = 3 × 108m/s

Total Distance = Speed × time = 3 × 108m/s × 30 × 10-6 s= 9000m

Distance between intercepting plane and signal station = 9000m/2 = 4500 m

4. Let t1 and t2 be the respective time taken by the car

Time taken = distance/ speed

t1 = distance 1/ speed 1 = 30km/ 40km/h = 0.75 hour

t2 = distance 2/ speed 2 = 30 km/20km/h = 1.5 hour

Average speed = Total distance travelled/ total time taken = 30km + 30 km/ t1+t2

Average speed = 30 km+ 30 km/ 0.75h + 1.5 h = 60 km/ 2.25 h = 26.7km/h

5. Let x1, x2 and x3 be the distance travelled by the train during the first three parts of the
journey.

Distance = speed × time

x1 = v1 × t1 = 60km/h × 0.52h = 31.2km

x2 = v2×t2 = 30km/h × 0.24 h = 7.2 km

x3 = v3×t3 = 70km/h×0.71h = 49.7km

Average speed = total distance travelled / total time taken

Average speed = x1+x2+x3/ t1+t2+t3 = 31.2km+7.2km+49.7km/ 0.52h+0.24h+0.71h

Average speed = 88.1km/1.47h = 59.9km/h

6. Total length of the track = 120km

Length of the first stretch of track, x1 = 30km

Length of the second stretch of track, x2 = 120km-30km = 90km

Average speed = 60km/h

Total time taken, T = Total distance / Average speed = 120km/60km/h = 2 Hours

Time taken for the first stretch, t1 = length of the first stretch (x1)/ speed of first
stretch(v1)

t1= 30km/ 30km/h = 1 hour

Time taken for the second stretch, t2 = length of the second stretch (x2) / speed of the
second stretch (v2), t2 = x2/v2

t2 = 90km/ v2

But t1+t2 = T or t2 = T - t1 = 2hours – 1 hour = 1 hour

Therefore, v2 = 90km/ t2 = 90km/1 hour = 90km/h

The train should travel at a speed of v2 = 90km/h in the second stretch so that the average
speed is 60km/h for the entire trip.

7. Case 1 – Initial velocity, u= 0 m/s ( starting from rest)

Final velocity, v = 36km/h = 36×1000m/ 3600s = 10 m/s

Time taken, t = 10s

Acceleration, a = v – u / t = 10 – 0 / 10 = 1 m/s2

Case 2 – Initial velocity, u = 36km/h = 10 m/s

Final velocity, v = 0 m/s ( stop)

Time taken, t = 20 s

Acceleration, a = v – u / t = 0 - 10 / 20 = - 0. 5 m/s2

8. Let the distance ‘x’ km be travelled by the train with a speed of 30km/h
Time taken, t1 = distance travelled / speed = x / 30 km/h = x/30 h

Time taken for the return journey, t2 = distance travelled / speed = x/ 45km/h = x/45 h

Average speed = Total distance / Total time taken = x + x / t1+t2 = 2x / x/30 h + x/45 h

Average speed = 2x/ x/18 km/h = 36 km/h

9. Let the total time taken be ‘t’

First half, time t1 = t/2

Speed in the first half , v1 = 40km/h

Distance travelled in the first half, x1 = v1 × t1 = 40km/h × t/2 = 20t

Second half time t2 = t/2

Speed in the second half, v2 = 60km/h

Distance travelled in the second half, x2 = v2 × t2 = 60km/h × t/2 = 30t

Average speed = Total distance travelled / Total time taken = x1+ x2 / t1 + t2

Average speed = 20t + 30 t / t/2 +t/2 = 50t / t = 50 km/h

10. Initial velocity, u = 0.5m/s

Acceleration, a = -0.05m/s2

Final velocity, v = 0 (stops)

Time taken (t) = ?

Acceleration, a = v – u / t or

Time taken , t = v – u /a = 0 – 0.5 / - 0.05 = 10 s

11. Case 1 – Initial velocity, u= 36km/h = 36 ×1000 m / 3600 s =10 m/s

Final velocity, v = 72km/h = 72×1000m/ 3600s = 20 m/s

Time taken, t = 5s

Acceleration, a = v – u / t = 20 – 10 / 5 = 2 m/s2

Case 2 – Initial velocity, u = 72km/h = 20 m/s

Final velocity, v = 0 (stops)

Time taken, t = 20 s

Acceleration, a = v – u / t = 0 - 20 / 20 = - 1 m/s2

12. Initial velocity, u = 72km/h = 72 × 1000m / 3600 s = 20m/s

Final velocity, v = 54km/h = 54×1000 m / 3600 s = 15m/s

Time taken, t = 10 s

Acceleration, a = v – u/ t = 15 – 20 / 10 = -0.5 m/s2

13. Speed = 108km/h = 108 × 1000 m / 3600 s = 30 m/s

The train travels 30 meters per second.

14. Let the distance of the school be ‘x’ km.

Time taken to go to school, t1 = distance / speed = x / 30km/h = x/30 h

Time taken for the return journey, t2 = distance / speed = x / 25km/h = x/25 h

Average speed = Total distance travelled / Total time taken = x + x / t1 +t2

Average speed = 2x / x/30 + x/25 = 27.27km/h

15. A---------------------------C-----------B

A to B = 250 m, B to C = 50m

(i) A to B, distance = 250 m, time taken = 1 minute and 40 seconds = 100 s

Average speed = distance travelled / time taken = 250 m / 100s = 2.5m/s

Average velocity = displacement / time taken = 250 m / 100 s = 2.5m/s along AB

(ii) A to C, distance = 250 m + 50 m = 300 m, time taken = 100 + 30 = 130 s,

displacement = 200 m

Average speed = distance travelled / time taken = 300 m / 130 s = 2.3m/s

Average velocity = displacement/ time taken= 200 m/ 130 s = 1.54 m/s along AC
