UPSC 2023 (CPWD) Asst. Architect

Q.1 Tiling, Subdivision, Packing, Weaving, Branching, and Recursion are part of the vocabulary of
(A) Parametric Patterns (B) 3D printing (C) CNC (D) Maya Software
Answer: (A) Parametric Patterns
Tiling Tiling is described mathematically as the arranging of
similar planar shapes to completely cover a given
area without overlapping. Thus, tiling may be thought
of as a natural extension of the concept of repetition,
but in 2D. The tiling pattern frequently relies on an
underlying grid of rows and columns.
Subdivision Surface subdivision is the technique of dividing a
continuous surface into smaller components by
tracing, scoring, or cutting lines through it. To unfold
smooth surfaces and shapes into flat components that
may be digitally manufactured on CNC machines or
laser cutters, designers frequently need to divide them
into smaller parts
Packing It is the placing of several items in an area so that
little or nothing of it is left behind.

Weaving Weaving is the interlacing of two threads at right

angles to one other that results in a textile. The weft
are the lateral threads that do not undulate, whereas
the warp are the longitudinal threads that interlace the
weft. In contrast to tiling and subdivision, a weave,
particularly the warp component, cannot partition the
surface into
repeatable, identical modular pieces.
Branching Branching is a fundamental topological growth
strategy in nature that is used to maximize surface
area, manage resources, and respond to structural
force. Like a tree's limbs, an onion's fibrous root
system, human lungs, or coralline algae. Branching
systems in nature are self-similar and recursive, so
likely to be fractal
Recursion Recursion is a type of repetition in which the
repetition is accomplished by having a process call
itself to create the following iteration. Recursion is
defined as the practice of repeating elements in self-
similar ways.

Q.2 In Computer Aided Design which one of the following is the process of evolutionary development and growth,
generate systems that obtain their complex organization and save from the interaction of system- intrinsic material
capacities and external environmental influences and forces?
(A) Natural morphogenesis (B) Demorphing (C) Branching (D) Differential actuation
Answer: (A) Natural morphogenes
 Demorphing: Morphing is a special effect in motion pictures and animations that changes (or morphs) one
image or shape into another through a seamless transition. Demorphing refers to the process of exiting a
morph and returning to one’s natural body.
 Branching is a fundamental topological growth strategy in nature that is used to maximize surface area,
manage resources, and respond to structural force.
 Differential actuation: It is a term of Mechanical engineering.

(C) Coriolis force (D) Adhesive force
Answer: (C) Coriolis force
 Doldrums: Doldrums is a natural phenomenon that
happens near the equator. In addition, it is an oceanic
belt that circles around the globe. The region has low
atmospheric pressure and lack of a significant amount
of wind. Also, the weather in the region is cloudy and
rainy. This zone or region is often known as the
convergence zone or ITCZ (Intertropical Convergence
Zone). Besides, they approximately lie between five
degrees north and five degrees south latitude.

outdoors?
(A) Mass movement (B) Wind well (C) Out filtration (D) Infiltration
Answer: (D) Infiltration
 Infiltration is the unintentional or accidental introduction of outside air into a building, typically through
cracks in the building envelope and through use of doors for passage. Infiltration is sometimes called air
leakage. The leakage of room air out of a building, intentionally or not, is called exfiltration.

actions and their effects or feedbacks to the user system?
(A) Natural Mapping (B) Computational Modelling
(C) Architectural Simulation (D) System Dynamics
Answer: (D) System Dynamics
 Natural Mapping: The term natural mapping comes from proper and natural arrangements for the relations
between controls and their movements to the outcome from such action into the world. The real function of
natural mappings is to reduce the need for any information from a user's memory to perform a task.
 Computational Modelling: Computational modeling is the use of computers to simulate and study complex
systems using mathematics, physics and computer science.
 Architectural Simulation: Building energy simulation or building performance simulation is a process that uses
digital 3D models of buildings to assess their performance regarding energy consumption. This includes the
energy used to heat or cool the building, electricity, and water consumption.
 System Dynamics: System Dynamics is a computer-based mathematical modeling approach for strategy
development and better decision making in complex systems. This approach uses computer-aided simulation
methodology based on feedback systems theory which complements the other Systems Thinking approaches.
