The Internet has bestowed numerous advantages upon individuals and society, facilitating

access to information, communication, education, entertainment, and commerce (MIT News,

2014). Despite these benefits, it introduces substantial challenges to privacy, with personal
data and online activities frequently monitored, collected, and shared by diverse entities,
including governments, companies, and hackers.

Online monitoring serves varied purposes, depending on the entity engaged in tracking.
Governments may surveil users to thwart crime, terrorism, or dissent, companies to deliver
targeted advertisements, personalized services, or conduct market research, and hackers to
pilfer identities, credentials, or monetary assets (Brennan Center for Justice, 2019).

To mitigate or prevent online tracking, users can adopt several measures, such as utilizing
privacy plugins or extensions, adjusting cookie settings in browsers, limiting tracking on
platforms and services associated with their accounts, deleting cookies and caches, blocking
image tracking, using a private browser, or employing a Virtual Private Network (VPN)
(wikiHow, 2022; Popular Science, 2020; Ghostery, 2020).

While achieving privacy online is feasible, it is not without challenges or assurances. Users
must remain cognizant of the inherent risks and trade-offs associated with Internet use, taking
proactive measures to safeguard their privacy and security. Additionally, users should
advocate for increased transparency and accountability from entities engaged in tracking,
urging the implementation of stronger laws and regulations that uphold their rights and
interests (MIT News, 2014).
