‭Greed – Midas’ Fountain‬


‭ efore you stands a great marble fountain. The fountain depicts a tall man clad in engraved armor with a flowing cloak.‬

‭In his right hand he holds a small open chest, from which glittering water pours into a shallow pool.‬

‭ fter years of searching, the legendary fountain of King Midas lies before you. The key to unlimited riches. All one must‬

‭do is bathe an object in its waters, and the object will turn to solid gold. But each new object must be more precious than‬
‭the last.‬

‭How far will you go for material wealth?‬

‭‬
● ‭ coin. 1 gp.‬

‭●‬ ‭A stone, or other common, useless object. 10 gp‬
‭●‬
‭●‬ ‭ small object of little value like cup, or a cheap ring. 25gp‬

‭●‬ ‭An object of minor personal value: a garment or a spare weapon. 50gp‬
‭●‬ ‭An object of minor personal value or a small animal: a piece of armor, a distinguishing garment (your signature‬
‭hat or cape), a chicken. 100gp +the items original value, if greater than 10gp‬
‭●‬ ‭An item of personal value: A holy symbol, your favorite weapon or shield, etc.: 250gp +the items original value, if‬
‭greater than 25gp.‬
‭●‬ ‭An item of great personal value which is hard or impossible to replace: A family heirloom, a unique item, a‬
‭weapon specifically made for the character. 500 gp +the items original value, if greater than 50gp‬
‭●‬ ‭An animal significant to the character, a sentient being of little importance to the character, a minor body part:‬
‭Familiar, animal companion, pet dog, a follower gained during this quest, a hireling, a finger, an ear. 500gp‬
‭●‬ ‭A living person of value to the character, or a major body part: A favorite hireling, or a family member, a hand, a‬

‭ ote that whatever is sacrificed to the fountain can never be restored under any circumstance short of deific‬

‭intervention. Any weapons, armor, or magic items lose their ability to function in their original capacity. Lost limbs may‬
‭not be regenerated. Lost people or creatures cannot be resurrected (though you can always get a new one). If they‬
‭attempt to do so, the spell will fail and they will feel a compulsive urge to guard whatever values they are carrying.‬

‭ ny object washed in the fountain is instantly turned into solid gold. Those not knowing the gold item’s source would‬

‭assume that the resulting object was a stunningly well-crafted sculpture. Examining the object with Detect Magic reveals‬
‭a strong aura of transmutation.‬

‭ hen the players are ready to leave, they can exit through the door behind them. They must exchange at least one item‬

‭each before they can leave.‬

‭Rewards‬

‭Envy - Shuffle‬
T‭ his challenge will take a bit of setup. Create a “deck” of index cards (or scraps of paper). On one side, write one reward‬
‭from the list below. I recommend a dark marker so that it can be easily read from across the table. Note that there are‬
‭multiple copies of some rewards. I recommend drawing fun pictures on the cards. It makes it more fun, I promise. There‬
‭should be roughly 40 cards. If this doesn’t divide evenly between the party, adjust the number of Nothing rewards until it‬
‭does (remove 1 for 3 players, add 2 for 6 players).‬

S‭ huffle the deck (or pile, whatever). Place the deck between the players. Tell them to each draw one card face down‬
‭(order doesn’t matter if you shuffled well). The players should then reveal their card to the other players without looking‬
‭at it. Ask the players to write down whose card they would like to receive without revealing their choice to the other‬
‭players. They may select themselves if they like, but it’s a risky choice, since they won’t know the result. Collect their‬
‭choices, then announce everyone’s choices and the results.‬

‭ nce the players have written down their choices, reveal them. If two or more players select the same reward, take the‬

‭reward and discard it. If you don’t need the cards anymore,‬‭destroy‬‭the reward. Preferably while laughing,‬‭especially if it‬
‭is something nice. If a player is the only one to select a reward, they may take the reward and place it in a pile of‬
‭collected rewards. If no one selects a reward, discard it.‬
‭Once all of the cards have been claimed or discarded, move on.‬
