05 - ESP-Pump Selection-Exercise 1
Given:
Casing size: 7" 23 ppf Power Frequency: 60 Hz
Specific Gravity: 1.08 Desired Flow: 6,000 bpd
TDH required: 4,500 feet BHT: 255 F
Problem:
What is the "best" pump for this application?
Assumptions:
1) Pump cost will be $100 per stage regardless of type or size.
2) Motor cost will be $300 per Hp regardless of type or size, except 562
motors.
Useful Equations:

Since the casing is 7", the largest pump we can get in the
hole is 538 series. Since bigger is probably better, we will
look at the "S" and "G" series pumps. We have four
pumps which can produce 6,000 bpd within the operating
range at 60 Hz:
The GN5200, GN5600 , GN7000 and SN8500.
We will size all four. We need the head per stage and the
BHP per stage from the pump curves. We will use the
following table for comparison.

Since we already know the number of stages we would use for every
type of pump, we can calculate the required motor HP for every type of
pump:
GN5200 Total BHP = 1.75 HP/stg x 182 Stgs x 1.08 = 344 HP
GN5600 Total BHP = 1.77 HP/stg x 162 Stgs x 1.08 = 310 HP
GN7000 Total BHP = 2.50 HP/stg x 128 Stgs x 1.08 = 346 HP
SN8500 Total BHP = 2.85 HP/stg x 106 Stgs x 1.08 = 326 HP
Even though for this example we have assumed that the pumps
will have the same cost regardless the type or size, let's check if
in all four cases we would be able to use standard pumps with the
selected number of stages without exceeding any of their physical
limits:
shaft max. horsepower,
housing max. pressure and
protector thrust bearing limit.

SN 8500 42.6 2.85 106 106 326
In order to find the maximum HP the shaft could see in the application,
we will use the maximum HP/stage in the load curve, 1.75 HP/stg:
BHP = ( HP/stg) * N° stgs. * S.G.
BHP = 1.75 * 182 * 1.08 = 344 HP
The standard (monel) shaft break horsepower limit, for 3,500 RPM
operation is 375 HP

Since that we are assuming the use of floater type pumps, the total
downthrust generated by the pump can be calculated by the equation:
F(lbf) = H(ft/stg) * N° stgs. * 0.433 psi/ft * S.G. * A(in2 )
Again, we are interested in the worst condition which will be at zero
flow. The shaft cross area is A = 0.785 in2.
F = 46 ft/stg * 182 stgs * 0.433 psi/ft * 1.08 * 0.785 in2 = 3,073 lbf
