Question 1
An air-standard Otto cycle has a compression ratio of 8.5. At the beginning of compression,
P1 = 100kPa and T1 = 300K. The heat addition per unit mass of air is 1400kJ/kg. Determine.
A. the net work, in kJ per kg of air.
B. the thermal efficiency of the cycle.
C. the mean effective pressure, in kPa.
D. the maximum temperature in the cycle, in K.

Question 2
A four stroke SI engine has the compression ratio of 6 and swept volume of 0.15 m3. Pressure
and temperature at the beginning of compression are 98kPa and 60ºC.
A. Determine the pressure, volume, and temperatures at all salient points if heat supplied
to it is 150kJ/kg.
B. Also find out entropy change, work done, efficiency and mean effective pressure of
cycle assuming cp = 1 kJ/kg · K, cv = 0.71 kJ/kg · K.
C. Also plot the cycle on T-S diagram.

Question 3
A gas turbine unit receives air at 1bar, 300K and compresses it adiabatically to 6.2bar. The
compressor efficiency is 88%. The fuel has a heating value of 44,186kJ/kg and the fuel-air
ratio is 0.017kg fuel/kg of air. The turbine internal efficiency is 90%.
Calculate.
A. The work of turbine per kg of air
B. The work of the compressor per kg of air compressed.
C. The thermal efficiency.
Note: For products of combustion cp = 1.147 kJ/kg K, γ = 1.33.

Question 4
Steam is the working fluid in an ideal Rankine cycle. Saturated vapor enters the turbine at
8.0MPa and saturated liquid exits the condenser at a pressure of 0.008 MPa. The net power
output of the cycle is 100 MW. Determine for the cycle.
A. The thermal efficiency,
B. The back work ratio,
C. The mass flow rate of the steam, in kg/h,
D. The rate of heat transfer, into the working fluid as it passes through the boiler, in MW,
E. The rate of heat transfer, from the condensing steam as it passes through the
condenser, in MW,
F. The mass flow rate of the condenser cooling water, in kg/h, if cooling water enters the
condenser at 15⁰C and exits at 35⁰C.
Question 5
A piston-cylinder device initially contains 50L of liquid water at 40⁰C and 200kPa. Heat is
transferred to the water at constant pressure until the entire liquid is vaporized.
A. What is the mass of the water?
B. What is the final temperature?
C. Determine the total enthalpy change.
D. Show the process on a T-v diagram with respect to saturation lines.

Question 6
Consider a steam power plant that operates on the ideal reheat Rankine cycle. The plant
maintains the boiler at 5000kPa, the reheat section at 1200 kPa, and the condenser at 20 kPa.
The mixture quality at the exit of both turbines is 96%. Determine the temperature at the inlet
of each turbine and the cycle’s thermal efficiency.
