Christianity is the world’s largest religion, with over 2.4 billion


believers. Christians adhere to the life and teachings of Jesus
Christ, the Messiah or Savior. His coming to save humanity was
prophesied in the Bible’s Old Testament and witnessed in the New
Testament. The celebration of Christmas originated to glorify the
birth of Jesus Christ.

★ Christians believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God that


redeemed humanity from sin.
★ Jesus Christ was born in approximately 7 B.C. in a stable in
Bethlehem. He was born to the virgin Mary and conceived through
the Holy Spirit, also known as the Immaculate Conception.
★ Most scholars believe that Jesus Christ reformed Judaism as a
religion.

★ In the mid-1st century, Christianity began in Judea and spread to
Europe, Mesopotamia and Asia over three centuries. It became the
official religion of the Roman Empire.
★ The word “Gospel” refers to the written accounts of Jesus’ life in the
Bible. Judaism’s Torah is basically the Old Testament of the Bible.
★ Jesus’ resurrection from the dead reinforced Christians’ belief that
he is the son of God.
★ The main biblical principles of Christianity are the Ten
Commandments or the Decalogue.
★ It is the divine law that
was handed down by
God to Moses at Mt.
Sinai. In both Exodus
and Deuteronomy, the
commandments are
listed. In Islamic
tradition, Moses
brought the laws
through the
commandments.
★ Christians believe in one God and the Trinity composed of the
Holy Spirit, the Father, and the Son. Ideas of demons, angels,
heaven, hell, and purgatory also exist.

★ The earliest
recorded
persecution of
Christians was
during the reign
of Nero in 64
A.D. During the
great fire that
ravaged Rome,
Christians were
crucified, torn to death by dogs, and burnt alive. After Nero, to be a
Christian became a capital crime. A number of Roman emperors did the
same until Diocletian, who enacted the ‘“Great Persecution.” He
ordered the burning of Christian books and churches.

★ The reason for the persecution of Christians, as written by Cicero,


was because of its great superstition. Historian Tacitus added that
it was deadly for the old teachings. Porphyry thought that it
disrespected the Roman gods.
★ During the reign of Constantine and co-emperor Licinius, the Edict
of Milan was signed officially ending the persecution of Christians.

★ Christians are warned against committing the Seven Deadly Sins
including pride, greed, sloth, wrath, lust, envy, anger and gluttony. In
addition, religious leaders such as the Pope, bishop, archbishop,
priest, pastor, minister, clergy, preacher, and deacon administer the
teachings and sermons.
★ Places of worship include churches, cathedrals, parishes, meeting
halls, and basilicas, but Jesus also says in Matthew 18:20 that “For
where two or three gather together in My name, there am I with
them.”
★ Other prominent figures of Christianity include the Virgin Mary
(Jesus’ mother), Abraham, John the Baptist, and the Apostles.
★ The New Testament contains 27 books in which four of the Gospels
talk about the life and stories Jesus’s life.
★ Today, there are many Christian denominations around the world.
Three of which are the Roman Catholics comprising half the world’s
Christians; the Eastern Orthodox with over 160 million adherents;
and the Protestants with with approximately 800 million followers.
★ Christianity is mainly
practiced in North
America, South, America,
Europe, and parts of Asia.
★ The center of the Roman
Catholic church is located
in Vatican City. at the St.
Peter’s Basilica.

★ In 1054, Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy separated after
the Patriarch of Constantinople and the Pope excommunicated each
other. Since then, political, cultural, and religious differences exist.
Eastern Orthodoxy includes the Greek and Russian Churches.
During the 16th century, Protestantism rose as a protest against the
Holy Roman Emperor, Charles V. Today, denominational groups
such as the Baptists, Methodists, Episcopalians, Evangelists,
Presbyterians and Pentecostals exist.
★ The Christian faith celebrates holidays such as the Advent,
Christmas, Lent, Epiphany, Easter Sunday, and All Saint’s Day.
Rituals such as the holy communion, baptism, and marriage seal
the life of a Christian.

★ Christmas
commemorates the birth
of Jesus and is
celebrated every 25th
day of December and
6th of January for the
Eastern Orthodox. Days
of Saints are also
celebrated with church
activities and festivities.
★ In the American popular
culture, St. Patrick’s day
and Valentine’s Day are
well celebrated.
