Session Title: Classification of Psychoactive Substances based on effects
Session Objectives:
At the end of the session, learners will be able to:
a.) Define the classification of psychoactive substances and the effects of
our health.
1. Stimulants
2. Depressants
3. Narcotics
4. Hallucinogen
5. Inhalants
Key Concepts: Catch-Up Friday – Grade 8
Use of a drug in which the user consumes the substance in amounts or
methods which are harmful to themselves or others.
3. Narcotics- are also called opioid pain relievers. They are only used for
pain that is severe and is not helped by other types of painkillers. When
used carefully and under a health care provider's direct care, these
drugs can be effective and safe at reducing pain.
Effects:
-Itchiness
-Constipation
-Slower breathing
4. Hallucinogen- are a large and diverse class of psychoactive drugs that
can produce altered states of consciousness characterized by major
alterations in thought, mood, and perception as well as other changes.
Effects:
-Blurred vision
-Irregular heartbeat
-Loss of coordination

Session Title: Common Mental Health Issues and Their Prevention
Session Objectives: At the end of the session, learners will be able to:
a) Identify the Common mental health issues and their prevention
b) Share concepts on the common health issues and their prevention

Key Concepts: Catch-Up Friday – Grade 8
Mental Health issues are complex and multifaceted and prevention strategies
can vary. Here are some common health issues along with potential prevention
measures
1. DEPRESSION
Prevention:
- Develop strong social connections: Maintain close relationships with
friends and family
- Physical Activity: Regular exercise has been linked to improved mood
and reduced risk of depression
- Healthy Lifestyle: Adequate sleep, balanced diet, and avoiding
substance abuse can contribute to well being
- Stress Management: Learn and practice stress reduction technique
such as mindfulness, meditation, or yoga.
- Seek Professional Help: Early intervention and therapy can be crucial
in preventing the escalation of depressive symptoms.
2. ANXIETY
Prevention:
- Stress Management: Develop effective coping mechanisms for stress,
such as deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, or cognitive-
behavioral techniques
- Regular exercise: Physical activity can help manage anxiety by
reducing tension and improving mood
- Balanced Lifestyle: Ensure a healthy work-life balance, self-care, and
avoid excessive use of stimulants like caffeine.
- Social support: If anxiety becomes overwhelming, seek help from a
mental health professional.
3. EATING DISORDERS
Prevention:
- Promote positive body image: Encourage a healthy and realistic
perception of body image.
- Education: Raise awareness about the dangers of extreme dieting,
unrealistic beauty standards and the importance of balanced approach
to nutrition
- Family involvement: Promote open communication within families to
address concerns and provide support
- Early intervention: Recognize warning sign early and seek professional
help promptly
- Nutrition Education: Teach the importance of a well-balanced diet and
the potential consequence of extreme diet practice
4. SELF-HARM
Prevention:
- Build emotional resilience: Encourage healthy coping mechanisms for
stress, disappointments and emotional pain.
- Communication: Foster and open and supportive environment where
individual feel comfortable expressing their feelings
- Support Networks: Strengthen social connections to provide a sense of
belonging and understanding
