1. Brief summary of the case:

A parent has a complaint and wants to talk to the principal. Since the principal is not
available, the parent has to meet with the assistant principal.

problem right away, but the parent has not spoken with the teacher.

53G-6-803. Parental right to academic accommodations.

(1) (a) A student's parent is the primary person responsible for the education of the student, and

the state is in a secondary and supportive role to the parent. As such, a student's parent

has the right to reasonable academic accommodations from the student's LEA as

specified in this section.

(b) Each accommodation shall be considered on an individual basis and no student shall be

considered to a greater or lesser degree than any other student.

(c) The parental rights specified in this section do not include all the rights or

accommodations that may be available to a student's parent as a user of the public

education system.

(d) An accommodation under this section may only be provided if the accommodation is:

(i) consistent with federal law; and

(ii) consistent with a student's IEP if the student already has an IEP.

(2) An LEA shall reasonably accommodate a parent's written request to retain a student in

kindergarten through grade 8 on grade level based on the student's academic ability or the

5. District policies that relate to the issues:
Mobile County Public School District Parent & Family Engagement Policy

MCPSS cares about the needs of parents and family members to assist with the learning

of their children, including engaging with school personnel and teachers MCPSS will

conduct, with the involvement of parents, an annual evaluation of the content and

effectiveness of this parental involvement policy. The evaluation will include identifying

barriers to greater participation in assisting with the learning of their children and

engaging with school personnel and teachers. The school district will use the findings of

the evaluation about its parental and family engagement policy and activities to design

strategies for more effective parent and family engagement with teachers and school

leaders to assist their children and remove any barriers to learning. (iii) strategies to

support successful school and family interactions.

6. Possible solutions to the issues:

a. Talk to the teacher about the situation and have them to observe to draw a
conclusion.
b. Have a meeting with all stakeholders involved in addition to the counselor to
brainstorm on a conclusion or solution to the issue or situation.
c. Have a meeting with the teacher, parent, and student to alert them on what is
going on currently. Once the situation has been assessed by the administrator, the
parent will receive a follow-up call on a solution. If there is not a problem, the
parents will receive a positive follow-up.

7. The solution you chose to resolve the issues:

8. Action steps (2-5) for implementing your solution, including a timeline for each step:
 Inform the principal of the situation
 Immediately reach out to the classroom teacher
 Effectively listen to parent
 Assess the situation
 Create a solution
 Inform parent of the decision

9. Potential moral and legal consequences of solution:

 Parent does not agree with the teacher after the teacher assesses the situation and decides
the complaint is not valid

 Parents may get upset because they may not know which student is involved
 Principal may decide to deal with the situation differently than expected

Part 2: Case Study Solution Rationale

Reflects professional ethics, integrity, and fairness

When you began a professional career, professionalism becomes a part of the way you walk,

talk, act, and think. The assistant principal remained acted in professional manner throughout the

situation dealing with the impatient parent. To find and fill a solution, the teacher or

administrator must act professionally maintaining integrity. Realizing that some complaints will

never come to fruition, listening to others acts and cares of concerns of the parent. When dealing

with a problem, everyone should meet to make sure all actions are fair and correct according to

federal laws and district policies.

Promotes social justice and ensures that individual student needs inform all aspects of

schooling

Going through different situations, the solution for a student being bullied guides to the fact that

their emotional needs may be lacking in some way. The teacher should be the first point of

contact for the parent especially because the teacher is ultimately responsible. The teacher has

built some type of relationship being able to help meet the need and provide a more sensible

solution than the administrator. This chain of command follows district policy and deals with the

situation at a minimal level.

Promotes collaboration, trust, learning, and high expectations

The proposed solution that I would choose would help build trust with the teacher and the parent

will feel like the complaint has been heard by the teacher. This solution helps supports the

student in learning to become more verbal with speaking up for themselves by communicating

with the teacher. To try and avoid these types of situations, the teacher can provide feedback on

the solution, and this will build relationships with the parent. When valid complaints are made,

students should be reminded of the rules, consequences, and expectations dealing with these

situations.
