UNIT 9: SOCIAL ISSUES (8 periods) LESSON 1: GETTING STARTED I. OBJECTIVES - By the end of this lesson, the students will be able to: 1. Knowledge - Gain an overview about the topic social issues. - Understand and use words and phrases related to social issues. 2. Core competences - Develop communication skills and creativity. - Be collaborative and supportive in pair work and teamwork. - Actively join in class activities. 3. Personal qualities - Understand the effect of social issues. - Develop self-study skills. II. MATERIALS - Grade 11 textbook, Unit 9, Getting Started - Computer connected to the Internet, Projector B - sachmem.vn III. PROCEDURES WORK STEPS ARRANGEMENT WARM- UP: (5 mins) Aims: Activate background knowledge about the topic and interest in it. - Introduces the activity and gives the instructions. - Work in groups and + Divides the class into 2 teams: team A and team B. whole class + Ss will take turns selecting a number and answering the question corresponding to the number. + Which team finds out the main idea of the picture, they will gain 50 points + Which team that has the most points will become the winner. - Explains again by Vietnamese if Ss need. - Calls on each team choose the number in their turn - Ss answer the questions: + If it is correct, the corner of the picture will appear and gain 10 points. + If it is incorrect, the number will not disappear and they will lose 5 points. - Checks Ss’ answers and gives them feedback. - Declares the winner. PRESENTATION: Activity 1: Vocabulary (5 mins) Aims: Get Ss to learn vocabulary related to the topic ⁃ Gives vocabulary and explains the Vietnamese meaning. ⁃ Requires Ss to read the reading text's sentences that involve the previously learned vocabulary. - Individually and ⁃ Calls randomly some Ss to read aloud the new words and gives whole class feedback. *, New words: - awareness (n) sự nhận thức - campaign (n) chiến dịch - draw attention: thu hút sự chú ý - focus on (ph-v) tập trung vào - struggle with: vật lộn với PRACTICE Activity 2: Listen and read the conversation (7 mins) - Work in pairs, Aims: Get the students involved in the topic individually, and ⁃ Introduces the activity and gives instructions whole class ⁃ Asks Ss to open their books ⁃ Sets the context for listening and reading the conversation ⁃ Elicits from the Ss the meaning of new words/ phrases if necessary ⁃ Ask Ss to skim through the conversation and ask (e.g. Who are the speakers? What do you think they are discussing? Can you list some of the social issues that they are mentioned in the conversation?) ⁃ Asks the Ss to listen to and at the same time read a conversation between Mai, Mark, and Nam. ⁃ Play the recording twice if necessary. ⁃ Call on some Ss to read the conversation aloud. ⁃ Give feedback.
Activity 3: Filling the word (5 mins) - Work in pairs,
Aims: Introduce words and phrases related to social issues individually, and ⁃ Introduces the activity and gives instructions whole class ⁃ Asks Ss to look at the pictures and the first letters of the missing words. ⁃ Explains that these words are related to social issues and they are all in the conversation in Activity 1. ⁃ Checks Ss’ comprehension. ⁃ Explains the meaning of any words Ss don’t know or find hard to understand. ⁃ Gives Ss 2 minutes to do this task. ⁃ Goes around and supports if necessary. ⁃ Calls Ss go to the board and write down the answer. ⁃ Requires some Ss to compare and give comments. ⁃ Give feedback. *, Expected answer: 1. crime 2. overpopulation 3. bullying 4. peer pressure 5. body shaming
