Rate of Reaction
• There are two conditions necessary for the collision to lead to formation
of products.
1. The collision between two reactant molecules must take place in the
right geometric orientation.
2. The collision must occur with enough energy to break the bonds in the
reactants so that new bonds can form, thus forming the products.
1. TEMPERATURE
An increase in temperature increases the speed of the particles. This
causes more frequent and more successful collisions, thereby increasing
the rate of reaction.
2. CONCENTRATION – number of particles of a substance in a given volume 4. CATALYST – a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction
without being used up in the reaction; it may be recovered unchanged at
An increase in the concentration increases the number of particles in the end of the process.
a given volume. This increases the frequency of collisions, thus the rate of
reaction increases.

between reactants, thus more frequent collisions. This increases the rate
of the reactants. ________________1. Catalysts speed up chemical reactions but are not
changed by them.
________________2. Heat, light, or change in odor can indicate a
physical change.
________________3. Activation energy is the minimum energy required
for reactions to start.
________________4. Low temperature speeds up reaction rates.
________________5. A low concentration of chemical slows reaction
rate.
