Individualassignment 1

The document contains 5 questions about thermodynamics for an individual assignment. Question 1 asks to compare the four laws of thermodynamics. Question 2 asks about path and state functions. Question 3 asks to determine pressures in a manometer. Question 4 asks to complete a table and plot states on a T-v diagram. Question 5 asks about a piston-cylinder process and to determine heat loss and plot the process on diagrams.

THERMODYNAMICS I (BDA20703)

INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT
SEMESTER 2 - 2023/2024

Answer all questions.

1. Compare the Zeroth, First, Second, and Third Laws of Thermodynamics in terms of definition and
examples of their applications.

2. What is the difference between a path function and a state (or point) function? What are the quantities
related to these functions?

3. An inclined double-fluid manometer consisting of mercury (Hg) with a specific gravity of 13.6 and oil (SG =
0.925) attached to a water pipe is shown in Figure Q3. Determine the absolute pressure of water in the
middle of the pipe and its gauge pressure. Take the atmospheric pressure to be 101.325 kPa. Assume the
water density is its density at 4°C. (Note: Please refer to the figure for detailed information).

4. Complete the data for the following table for water. Plot all the states on a T-v diagram with axes labels, axes
values, saturation, and constant pressure curves on an A-4 size, on a single and separate page. Show all the
calculations, and solving steps.

T, P, x, v, u, Phase of

2 400 1450

5. The piston-cylinder device contains 0.15 kg of water at an initial pressure of 2.0 MPa and temperature of
350°C. The gas undergoes isobaric expansion to 100°C, followed by isothermal compression to 1.2 MPa,
determine:

(i) the phases of each states in the process,

(ii) the amount of heat loss during the expasion (in kJ), and
(iii) plot the entire process from the initial to the final state on a T-v and P-v diagram (please plot the
diagram with approximately A-4 size, on a single and separate page).
