Materials:
The materials required for this experiment include filter paper, ink samples of 8 kinds
of ballpen, acetone, a beaker, a ruler, and a pencil for marking the paper strip. It is
important to have a controlled environment with proper ventilation while conducting
this experiment due to the use of acetone, which is a volatile and flammable solvent.
Procedure:
In this procedure, we need to find what kind of ballpen that used in the paper that is
given to us so to conduct the experiment, we have 8 kinds of ballpen a piece of filter
paper is taken and a small drop of ink of the 8 ballpens is applied at the bottom of the
paper strip. The strip is then placed in a beaker with acetone, ensuring that the ink spot
does not touch the solvent. As the acetone travels up the paper by capillary action, it
carries the ink components with it. Different pigments present in the ink will move at
different rates, resulting in separate spots on the paper strip. The distance traveled by
each pigment is recorded, and the Rf values (Retention factor) are calculated to
identify the components present in the ink.
Findings/Result:
Following the experiment, it was found that the ink sample divided into distinct
pigments since part of the ink had the same colors and some was lighter and darker
than the other. Every pigment produced a distinct result, but one ink suited the
provided paper, revealing its special qualities. The components of the ink were
successfully separated by the acetone-based paper chromatography method.
In summary, the analysis and separation of complex mixtures can be accomplished
with the help of paper chromatography, which use acetone as the solvent. This
exercise sheds light on the ink's composition and emphasizes the use of
chromatography in scientific investigations. We can appreciate paper
chromatography's importance in developing the study of chemistry by knowing its
historical background, important personalities, and effects.

As they collect light energy and transform it into chemical energy, plant pigments are
essential to the process of photosynthesis. Understanding plant biochemical processes
can be gained through studying plant pigments. Based on the varying solubilities of
these pigments in a solvent, paper chromatography is a straightforward but efficient
method for processing and analysis.
Objectives:
The main objectives of this study are to determine the composition of plant pigments
in Mayana and Yellow Top plants, to understand the role of acetone and alcohol as
solvents in separating these pigments, and to analyze the results obtained through
paper chromatography.
Materials:
The materials required for this experiment include Mayana and Yellow Top plant
samples, acetone and alcohol solvents, filter paper, a beaker, a watch glass, and a
mortar and pestle. And we also used gloves so that our hands would not be stained by
the plants and hot water.
Procedure:
In order to extract the plant pigments from the samples, we first mashed the plants
using a mortar and pestle and then placed the mixture in a beaker with solvents like
acetone and alcohol. After that, the extracts are put on filter paper and put in a
developing chamber with an alcohol and acetone solvent system and some hot water
in the basin. The pigments are separated according to their solubility as the solvent
travels up the paper with them. The plants pigment traveled so fast in acetone than the
alcohol The various pigments contained in the plant samples are then identified and
measured using the chromatogram that is produced as a consequence.
Findings/ Result:
The many pigments found in Mayana and Yellow Top plants, together with their
relative concentrations, will be made clear by the experiment's results. The differences
in pigment composition and distribution can be better understood by contrasting the
chromatograms of the two plant species. Comprehending the mechanisms of
adaptation and plant responses to varying environmental conditions can be facilitated
by this information.
